Teachers....Question about being pregnant and NOT tenured
Hey Ladies,
I am not pregnant yet....but hopefully I will be in 1-2 years.
I am still searching for a teaching job BUT I am afraid that I will get pregnant before having tenure, Does anyone know what happens in this instance??? How long would you get for maternity leave????
Thanks!
Wishing you all happy and healthy pregnancies.

Re: Teachers....Question about being pregnant and NOT tenured
I got tenure and granted maternity on the same board meeting but dont go by my district, I teach in Hempstead.
Depending on the school district you get
6 weeks vaginal birth 8 weeks - c-section Family medcial leave act is 12 weeks.
I know in my district I used my sick days 8 weeks worth and now I am not getting paid anymore.

Re: Teachers....Question about being pregnant and NOT tenured
I am due in July so it is silly to use maternity leave which would be my sick days. I am going to take the FMLA which starts the first day of school. My dilemma is I am still a leave replacement and I am hoping this doesnt stand in the way of my being offered tenure next year.

I think it all depends on your school and principal.

I agree- I think it all has to do with your principal & superintendant. In my district, due to all of the maternity leaves, they sometimes demand you return within 6 weeks or at the beginning of the next semester, or they will not secure your job if you are untenured.

When you do finally get a job in a district, just make sure to ask all the women you work with what they did or if they know. Some districts make you "pay back the time" when you are untenured and miss any part of the year for any reason. For example, if you take 6 weeks maternity, they will hold off your tenure for that long. It's not a huge deal, but it may just take a little longer to get your tenure.

my district does this. whatever time you miss is tacked onto the end of your tenure period. however, if you request an additional leave of absence do not assume you will be asked back!
