Re: re-post from NFR-all the CT families..

Where would you and/or your DH be working?

We have friends that live in both Ridgefield and Wilton. Both are very nice towns.

Wilton is about an hour and 30 minutes from LI (Huntington anyway), but it's still fairly close enough to the city and such. Homes a bit more $$$ b/c of the proximity to the city.

Ridgefield has a great town...very quaint! It's further north than Wilton, near Salem & Bedford, NY. It has more of a mix of homes, from moderately priced to estates.

We also have a friend that lives in Newtown. It's nice up there as well. Again, a mix of homes, but further north.

Wilton is $$$ (Ridgefield is pretty expensive too) as are most areas fairly close to NYC. One of the "cheaper" areas on the shoreline (which isn't cheap by any means) is Norwalk. There are really nice areas and not so nice areas. If you move further inland, there are a lot of great areas that are very reasonably priced. where in CT are you looking? I can recommend a bunch of areas.

Wilton is big $$$. Our friends live on teh same street as the Hershey's (yes, as in Chocolate).

My brother lives a little further east and north, in Shelton. It's just past Fairfiled and they love it there. He used to commute to the city by train and he said it was too long - an hour and a half, so I am not sure you want to go that far, but its really nice by him.

My husband is working in Stamford right now.. we have seen Bethel-any feedback on that area? I am open for any other suggestions too....I am a teacher and haven't started looking yet-I have been teaching here for five years so I am hoping to find something. If i cant, we will need to rent somewhere until I can find a job.. thanks so much for your help!

I don't know too much about Bethel, but it may be a PITA to commute from Bethel to Stamford b/c it's all backroads. If you ever want to go into NYC, Bethel is on the local Danbury train line (transfer at South Norwalk to get to Grand Central). Bethel is very close to Danbury, which has a decent amount to do.

Since your DH works in Stamford, it's a little bit tougher to find decently priced areas nearby. I'd also check out Danbury. If you want to look further east, there are areas like Trumbull and Monroe, which are reasonably priced. Unfortunately, your DH would be heading into the traffic on I-95, which could make the commute a lot longer. It depends how long you're willing to make your commute. Good luck with the search.

Re: re-post from NFR-all the CT families..

If your husband is working in Stamford and you haven't found a position yet, I would look further north - Stratford, Shelton, Trumbull, Milford, Monroe. Good areas and not as expensive as the majority of Fairfield County. He will experience traffic driving to and from Stamford, but nothing more then here on Long Island. Norwalk or close to Danbury is good too.

Just wanted to add that my brother works in Stamford and lives in Shelton/Huntington area. He says his commute isn't bad at all.

I never worked on LI so I don't know how the commute is, but I-95 South between New Haven and Stamford is awful. DH works in Stamford and even though we only live 6 exits from his office, it can take at least 1/2 hour to get there. His co-worker lives in Fairfield, and it usually takes him 1 hour to get in to the office by 7:30/8 am (only 20 miles away). It only gets worse the later you leave. Stratford and Milford are significantly further away from Stamford than Fairfield. We drove around Stratford last weekend and we really liked the area, but it's too far away for DH to commute to Stamford. DH commuted for 1 1/2 hours each way for a year and doesn't want another hour + long commute. If your DH wouldn't be commuting during rush hour, it wouldn't be as bad. If you're seriously considering an area, I would check out the drive from that area to Stamford just to see if you're willing to do that commute.
