I was curious about the same thing. I teach on LI, and thought we had 10 weeks paid, but I am not too sure if that is true.

Re: NYC teachers what did you do for maternity leave
Depending on csection ornatural.
If you give birth naturally you have 6 weeks, within those 6 weeks you use up your days that is why you get paid. If it is a c section you have 8 weeks. You can only borrow days once you have exhausted your sick days. Once the six weeks are up youare on your own. YOu can take a leave called SLOAC (which is a sort of child care leave) It is unpaid however you get medical coverage for 4 months.
Some people (like myself) have no sick days left even before the baby is born that is why some people take a grace or borrow. But you only get paid 6 weeks.
When are you due?
I gave birth before school started so I had to start counting 6 weeks from the day the baby is born!!!!! Not six weeks once shcool starts. IT *****!

I teach on LI and am due in July. I am planning on taking the FMLA which starts the first day of school. I will not have to use any of my sick days this way.

Re: NYC teachers what did you do for maternity leave
I'm using the days in my bank, so I will get paid for only about 19 days. I would really like to be home 12 weeks with the baby, so we are going to try and see if we can swing that.

Re: NYC teachers what did you do for maternity leave
Noel -
I belive what I am doing is taking the 6 weeks FMLA and then 6 weeks disability which keeps you on payroll and keeps your health ins. for another 6 weeks. You get paid for weekends and holidays. That's what I and another teacher who is due a week after me are doing... came straight from pour payroll sec. Hope this helps

Re: NYC teachers what did you do for maternity leave
I was told I could take longer if I had the days in my bank -- but I actually had negative 7 because I was hit by a car a year earlier outside of the school and they never approved it as a "line of duty" so I lost the days.
My advice would be to talk to your union rep, and if your union rep isn't so good then call the union #.
I borrowed 20 days and then did the 30 days paid for nights/weekends/holidays thing until my 8 weeks (c-section) were up.
