Banking Question-Does anyone have free-overdraft on thier checking account?
I'm not happy with my current bank (washington mutual)...I used to bank with Chase, and they had free overdraft-but a high monthly service charge....so, I would like to switch to another bank.... who do you ladies use?

if anyone on yr circle or family can recommend a credit union - that maybe an option. the large commercial banks charge huge fees -credit unions are more customer friendly JMHO

For Chase....... they usually don't have any monthly service charge on accounts as long as you keep a certain amount of $$ in the account.... Or are you referring that you need to have a specific amount in your checking account balance, otherwise they charge you?

We belong to Nassau Educators Federal Credit Union and have 500 overdraft protection. It costs nothing per month to have it. However if you tap in to the overdrafted funds you get charged $17.

Re: Banking Question-Does anyone have free-overdraft on thier checking account?
I don't know why specifically...I had a checking account, I had free overdraft (there was no charge if I dipped into it)....and I had a monthly service charge...
I did not have a savings account...perhaps there are different rates and services based on the account that you have.

I have a checking account with Chase and no monthly charges. That's weird. Perhaps it's different for each account setup I guess.....

I had the account a few years ago....maybe it was because I didn't maintain a certain balance, I'm not sure now....but I know I switched because of the monthly fee....anyway...I get paid every two weeks, and sometimes I need to dip into my overdraft a little, and washington mutual has huge overdraft fees....soooo....it's off to citibank I go!

Re: Banking Question-Does anyone have free-overdraft on thier checking account?
Chase is free...technically it not Overdraft (anymore)...its a Line of Credit that piggy backs your checking account... its at a higher rate but if you just need it to get out of a jam,(check, credit, debit, etc..) and then repay it within a month, no charges.
knock on wood but i havn't needed to touch mine

Us too. I used to have Wamu and I hated that they would charge $30.00 if you went over.

Citibank used to have this program, and still may, called "Bank at Work". Basically, if you had your check direct deposited you would have the fees waived for a Citibank Account. That is what I have and I don't pay any fees at all. I have overdraft protection and there is no cost to me having it...if I use it and maintain a balance, then I have interest payments.

Dont most banks charge? I have the credit union and I was charged 27.00 the 1 and only time I had a problem with a check. With Wamu there are ways to get around that.

Exactly...I think last month I went over about $200 and was charged 14 cents. I beleive the overdraft limit is based on your credit score. If your credit score is low you may not even be offered the overdraft feature.
