BEST NEWS!!! Update at Bottom on my Basement water problem
Okay, so this may very well be good news!!!
We are just days away from knocking down the sheetrock and jackhammering up our floor to put a french drain/sump pump in... WHICH WE MAY NOT NOW NEED TO DO!!!!
Every time there was water in the basement, we were never home, so we were never able to see the source of it. Well, Thursday night we had a mini downpour and I happen to be home and watching TV in the basement and was able to see the water come flooding in through my window!
We spoke to our landscaper today about the possibility that perhaps one of the outside gutter drains is clogged, and he said it may very well be just that based on what I saw Thursday and witnessed this morning while it was raining. Water was pooling around the outside of the drain in the front yard up against the house (next to the window that water started gushing into the other day) and lots of water was dripping from the top of the drain pipe up by the soffit, so it seems SOMETHING is just not draining correctly. It also looks like we need to have that part of the landscaping regraded so that water flows away from the house.
This is potentially VERY good news!
So, I will be calling our contractor who was taking the walls out and letting him know NOT to come this weekend, and will be calling the french drain people and pushing our appointment to the middle of September (just so we can see what happens after the landscaper fixes the gutter and drain pipe).
At this point IF we do have to eventually cancel the french drain, DH and I are okay with losing the $400 deposit we gave them. And the only other thing we need to do is replace the carpet which has had a few really good soakings. Peanuts compared to what the french drain was costing us!
Landscaper is coming next wednesday to fix the drain pipe.
keep your fingers crossed for me!

Re: Update on my Basement water problem
The EXACT same thing happened to us and while the water didn't pour in (thank goodness) it leaked. And the reason was that the gutters and drains were clogged. We got them cleaned out and hopefully that is the fix.

Re: Update on my Basement water problem
The same exact thing happened to us. We ended up putting in a sump pump system as a back up. But we also put mesh lining on the drain pipes to keep out large clumps of leaves, which move during rain and build up at the very spot the rain is supposed to go down. We also bought plastic window well covers as an additional back up.
Good luck!!

We thought we had a more serious issue, and REALLY hope this is the problem. We basically live down in our basement!
We do have one of those plastic window well covers, but I think the drain is so backed up, there was no place for the water to go instead. We also live high up on a large hill, so there's always LOTS of water runoff, especially in the back since our neighbors behind us are even higher than we are.

Re: Update on my Basement water problem
Well, that's good that there seems to be a reasonably priced solution, but I'm sorry you have to go through all the aggravation

I'm hoping that's the problem! That could be unbelievable news.
I would still try to get the deposit back though.

For now, we pushed the appointment for the drain to the middle of September so we can see what happens once they relandscape the front and put in the new gutters and drain pipes. We're going to hope for rain between then and Sept 12.
Unfortunately, I don't think we can get the deposit back, as it states in the contract that we had 3 business days from signing the contract to cancel and get our deposit back. But who knows, I'm a pretty good talker and usually can get us out of these sort of things.

If they came in and gave you an assessment and an estimate and didn't see the real problem first, then it wouldn't make sense to even do the work. It's not that you are going with someone else do to the work. The work may not be necessary.
Well anyway, I know you'll figure it out..keeping my fingers crossed!

Re: Update on my Basement water problem
OMG!!!! BEST NEWS EVER!!!!!!
DH called me at work right before I left to let me know that they found the problem and it was OUTSIDE!!! We have two drain pipes in the front of the house that go from the gutter into the ground, and then another drain pipe underground that carries the water to the street (we live on a pretty steep hill). Well, it turned out that the pipe that's underground in the front yard had a crack in it, so that water was backing up during heavy rain storms and backing up into our basement on the front side of the house. So, the blocked off that pipe, put a new one in underground in an other area in the front of the house which they had already dug up and just re-routed the pipe. I was so happy when DH told me this that I literally started to cry at my desk, thank goodness I was getting ready to leave!
Now, we're just hoping for some rain so we can make sure this fixed the problem.
I'M SO ***** HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!

Re: BEST NEWS!!! Update at Bottom on my Basement water problem
Thanks Ladies!
I woke up at 5:00 am Saturday morning, in the midst of a terrific thuder and rain storm just to go check on the basement. Of course DH thought I was wacko, but it just made my weekend!
