Re: If you could pick a state you wanted to live in...
I would try to find one of those quizzes online that you answer a bunch of questions about your needs, lifestyle, wants etc. They are usually pretty accurate for finding places that might be of interest. I think that would be a good starting point. Unfortunately, i dont remember where any of them are!

Re: If you could pick a state you wanted to live in...
Yup, those quizzes were my first step. Then I went on all the sites with the "best places to live" and picked from there. I did research on schools (www.greatschools.net), crime, pollution, etc. I also searched the job market and the size of the city. Finally, once we narrowed down the state and city/county, we focused on the neighborhood and went house hunting in neighborhoods we "felt" comfy. We picked right!

Re: If you could pick a state you wanted to live in...
West Coast: La Jolla, CA San Diego, CA West Hills (Portland), OR
East Coast: Charlotte, NC Pointe Viedra Beach, FL Manhattan, NY (only if I was a millionare and could live in a warmer climate from December 27th - April 30th)
ETA: As you can tell weather is a HUGE factor for me. The only way DH got me to move to Monroe was he promise to shovel every flake of snow off my car, walkway, deck, etc. Plus, we are closer to family up here. I would love to live in La Jolla, CA on the beach where DH & I can surf, swim, lay out in the sun anytime. Schools are important for property value, but we would do private schools if we lived there.

Re: If you could pick a state you wanted to live in...
I did a lot of research while we were engaged when we considered moving off of LI. We decided that if we did move, we would go to North Carolina. I just did that Find Your Spot quiz and the top city for me was Durham, North Carolina.
