Shopping on Black Friday - Worth It????

Are the deep cut in prices worth the early morning rise? I was discussing this with someone today and they said that sometimes, for example, a digital camera might be selling for really cheap, but they only have 2 in stock and you won't get it anyway, no matter how early you arrive.

I'm interested in hearing stories about people who have tried to score the day after thanksgiving early in the morning - and if you think it's worth it. What stores are you most successful in?

I hate crowds but love sales. I'd like to get a palm pilot for my husband and a Ipod.

Thanks ladies and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

Re: Question for Black Friday shoppers

One year about 3 years ago I came home , and figured out what I spent versus retail price actually.

I spent $170 and the total full price for everything was over $500....so yes I saved a LOT.

Last year I got a $169 digital camera for $69.99....That was a steal.

The bigger priced items are worth it in my opinion as are toys as well. The toy stores are MADNESS , but you will likely get at least 50% almost everything.

Walmart has this Ipod toy accesory for $10...It was on Amazon for $49.99 yesterday....

Just some examples....

Of course they LURE you in with the big tickets and hope you spend spend spend...

I only buy things at least 50% off regualr price.

ETA_ I wanted an IPOD as a gift, there are no real sales on them. $5 off is the best I saw this year. Those are one of the items that rarely go on sale.

I think it totally depends on what you need. Clothes and stuff - no, I don't think the discounts are worth it. Toys and electronics - definitely!!!! I will be happy if all I get done tomorrow is ToysRUs and Best Buy. Everything else can wait.

I agree with this. If you're looking for toys or electronics, DVD's, video games, etc., it's worth it to get up early. You can save a lot of money. But I don't find it worth it for clothes. I also don't go at 5 am, I usually go around 8. The stores still aren't that bad, they are still pretty well stocked and I get a couple of hours extra sleep.
