How much experience do you have with babies?

I'm just curious. JT and I have a ton of experience. He helped raise his niece from the time she was born to the time she was 3. So he knows the whole getting up in the middle of the night thing very well. He used to help his sister and brother-in-law out and get up with her and feed her and stuff. We were also both nannies for very young children. Not that this is the same as having your own child, but we both have a good start in what it takes to feed a baby, change a baby, bathe a baby, etc. I feel like I am ready for when the baby is actually here, it's the pregnancy that freaks me out!

DH has none at all which worries me just a bit! I have two younger sisters, one who is 6 years younger than I and the other who is 11 years younger than I so have had a great deal of experience with the second one when she was growing up so feel pretty comfortable... though nothing will compare to my own and not having anyone to "pass them off" to when the going gets tough! LOL

Re: How much experience do you have with babies?

Obviously nothing can prepare you for having your OWN child, but I am thankful that I feel comfortable with all the basics. I was a nanny for two people who had never even been in the presence of a baby until they had their own, and they had TWINS! So I started to work with them when they were just a few months old, and the parents would always say, "Well, you know better than I do, so what should I do?" I was constantly showing them things like bathing them, changing their diapers, etc. I love them and still talk to them to this day now that their kids are 8 yrs. old, but I'll never forget when the mom walked in the room one day while I was talking to the boys, who were probably 9 months a the time, and she said, "OMG! You're supposed to TALK to them?!?!?!" And then she told me she and her husband never spoke to them because they didn't think they'd understand!

Re: How much experience do you have with babies?

I have a brother who is 9 years younger than me and used to call me tt mommy. My FH has a 8 almost 9 year old son and I was a nanny for a family of 2 for 6 years. Girl was 2 when I started and boy was not born until 2 weeks after I started. I have always been surrounded by people with children. I am confident that I can handle it, but of course I recognize there are things I will have to learn that only a mother has to experience.

Re: How much experience do you have with babies?

I was a nanny for 8 years before i had Kaylee and Jt has been around children all of his life (baby cousins and babysitting). I thought i was ready and so did he. It is totally different when it is your own child. I know it sounds silly but something is just different about it. We are experienced from our past but being a new parent is a whole new experience.

I had some from babysitting, I'd taken some Red Cross courses back then so I knew how to change diapers, etc. Plus I have some younger cousins that I used to help take care of.

DH had NONE and was nervous, but picked it up right away. Seriously, in the hospital he was changing diapers and giving her bottles. He's amazing with her, and now he chooses to be the primary care giver for her on the weekends so that he gets a chance to bond with her as well.

I have to say, you will fall in love with your husband all over again when you watch them with your child. Chat Icon

Considering just how well I know your hubby, I'd say you're well prepared for another baby!Chat Icon

Re: How much experience do you have with babies?

DH had no baby experience at all before Cassidy was born and he was a nervous wreck! However, the moment she was born, it really kicked in for him. He was the 1st person to hold her, and he actually went into recovery, just him and Cassidy for almost an hour before I even got in there, and he just held her and talked to her.
He was changing diapers and feeding her from day 1.

Re: How much experience do you have with babies?

My DH doesnt have very much (uh oh!) but I have quite a bit so I gues thats better than neither of us having any :) I have a younger sister that I helped out with plus did tons and tons of babysitting for young babies as a teenager.I also dated a guy back in the day that had a 1 yr old daughter - I was there when she was up in the middle of the night so I know what I have in store!

Re: How much experience do you have with babies?

I used to babysit for almost every kid in my area- but not since law school. I even nanny'd for 2 kids for the summer. The first summer the kids were 8 months and 2 years old. The second summer was a year later for the same kids. My sister has a baby whose 6 months old. That's my best recent experience.

DH's sister is 13 years younger than him, but I don't know how much experience he had with her Chat Icon

Re: How much experience do you have with babies?

I worked in day care for a year- caring for babies ages 3months to 2 years. I am familiar with the basics, but I am a little nervous about when it will be my own baby crying in the middle of the night

I have never in my life held a baby, none the less changed or fed one. Neither has DH. It comes natrual I'm sure but I find it funny that I have ZERO experience with babies.

Re: How much experience do you have with babies?

me, a bit because of nieces and nephews. DH, none at all. He has never changed a diaper. I think he held a newborn once. Should be a fun road ahead.Chat Icon

Re: How much experience do you have with babies?

I have enough experience also. Do I have a lot? Not to say I am going to be SUPERMOM!

But I use to babysit all the time. My mom use to babysit a bunch of kids when I was young, so I use to help her and I have a lot of younger cousins. So I'm pretty good.

DH has 2 brothers that are 10 years younger than him, so he has experience there and a bunch of younger cousins.

I was also a volunteer EMT so my emergency skills are up to date.

I'm sure I will still be a nervous reck!
