Local Phone Service
Who do you use? I need to set up the phone in the new house and I'm not sure who to use. I have always had Verizon but are they the best? Please let me know your pros and cons to your house phone services! Oh, and since I have Slomin's, I need a hard wired phone in the house. Both our families live in NY (mine are in the 845 area code and DH's are in the 718 area code) so we will need a regional service. Additionally, we live in Essex County, NJ! TIA!!

You might want to consider Optimum Voice if you already have cable service through Cablevision. Use this phone to make all your phone calls since you get unlimited calling throughout the US. Verizon can get expensive for regional calling as they charge you by the minute.
I have Optimum Voice.... and I am going to get a cheap Verizon landline just for the security system. Someone on here said you can get very basic Verizon service (allowed 20 calls up to 5 minutes each or something like that) for only $6 buks a month.

Re: Local Phone Service
We have Verizon and I have had no problems. My uncle switched to OptimumVoice to get that deal with the cable and something else and hates it. He has had nothing but problems. I have heard this from others as well, but it isn't me, so I am not sure.

Re: Local Phone Service
Thank you all for the replies. Unfortunatley though, we have Comcast cable service and they don't have phone service yet in my area. My development is very new and I guess they haven't gotten to our street yet.

Is idt phone or security system? I haven't heard of that.
As far as Slomin's goes, I was actually only going by what everyone had said on an earlier post about needing a land line for the security system. As it turns out though, my cable company doesn't offer phone for our address.

No it is not affiliated with the Security CO. It is IDT. I had them when we had our apt. I was tired of paying $90 for verizon when we didnt even really use the phone. So my mom had IDT and said it was good. So I switched. It was S29.99 a month and $39.99 a month for long distance. But we did the 29.99 and we called FL a lot and our bill wasnt that much, I think for long distance it is 5 cents a minute. and they local service covers a lot of area codes. like the ones you mentioned. 516,.631,718,845, 914,345 etc. so check them out.

Just an FYI, you can still get the security system connected to it. All they have to do is install a separate piece.
I have IDT. no complaints.

Read this thread in regards to my reasoning behind not connecting a security system to an Optimum Voice phone.

Thank you so much for posting this DJPill!! I had never seen this.
I need to make a phone call and tell my folks about this because they sure didn't know about these problems and they just had a system installed this past week so they should be abl to have it changed accordingly without charge! Thanks!

Re: Local Phone Service
Just to clarify... I am sure there are plenty of people that have security systems tied into OV.
But there have been cases of false alarms with some people who use OV. My wife is the type of person that doesn't want to chance having her alarm going off at 3am in the morning because Cablevision decides to upload new firmware to their cable boxes.

Re: Local Phone Service
Also... this brings up another point.
What if the crook decides to locate the cable wire coming into your house (which is sometimes very visable)... and cut it before he enters the house?
Your security system won't do jack if that happens.

Re: Local Phone Service
The thing about the crook is that, that can happen with a phone line as well, not just a cable line?

True. But I have found that verizon phone wires (which were usually installed when the house was built)... are hidden and concealed a lot better than cable lines.
Hell my cable line is right on the side of my house... you can see it very easily. LOL
