IUD ladies, can I have some info?!
I have a consult on Wed. regarding the IUD, if you have it or know anything about it can you give me some specifics about it? Pros and cons. TIA

I also went for a consult for it and my Dr talked me out of it mostly because of my age (too young) and because I only have one child.
There is a slight risk that it can affect your future fertility. There is also a risk of ectopic pregnancy which would be life threatening to the mother and the pg would have to be terminated. There is also a risk of getting PID (pelvic inflammatory disease - an infection in your uterus) which could potentially leave you sterile since it can go completely unnoticed until it's too late. These are the reasons why the ideal candidate is over 30 and has 2 children. The risks appear to be higher with the IUD with the hormones in it (Mirena? I think). Paraguard is hormone free.
Doesn't mean they won't give it to you if you don't meet that criteria, it just means that you wouldn't be the "ideal" candidate.
The pros are pretty obvious - it's birth control that is 99.9% effective and you never even have to think about more than to once a month check for the removal string to make sure it hasn't shifted. It's most recommended for a person in a monogamous relationship (ie married) because there are increased risks of catching STDs with an IUD.
Keep in mind that all these "increased risks" are very small.

I am working on researching this myself right now. My midwives recommended it to me if I didn't want to do the mini pill. I am actually just waiting to see if I get a period because if I do and I am regular like I was before the baby I'll just do natural family planning. It worked fine for use before Miranda and if I got pregnant it wouldn't be the end of the world. I loved my Nuvaring. If I wasn't BFing I would totally go back on that.

Thnaks so much! I think I may be the ideal candidate, I am over 30 and have 3 kids already, but would like 1 more in about 3-5 years.

Hahaha if this happens to me I already decided DH is getting a vasectomy or i'm tying my tubes. No IUD will be necessary.
If you already had a child an IUD is a good form of birth control.
