What non law fields do Attorneys go into?

I am trying to keep my options open as DH has a decent position in Florida. I am not admitted in Florida and I am not going to re-take the Bar there. I am admitted in New York though. I am still looking in New York, but I want to apply to some fall back positions in Florida, even if for nothing more than to buy me time while I find the legal position I want in NY and try to wait out the market. Any advice?

Re: What non law fields do Attorneys go into?

I work for a large home care agency that provides services all through out NYS, NJ and FL.

One of our VPs is an attorney. While I'm not really sure of all the specific details of his position Chat Icon , I do know that he oversees a lot of policy stuff, handles a lot of HR issues, stays on top of things that could potentially end up in the media, and signs off on practically anything that requires a blessing from a higher power.

I have an ex who completed the law school/bar thing for NYS, then ended up opening his own hiking store/business which was his real love. He also dappled in real estate for a bit.

I am sure funding for positions may be an issue in these times, but I always enjoy consulting with the people who work at Nassau Suffolk Legal Services. They are so nice and always extremely helpful for my clients when they run into problems that require assistance from an attorney.

I know a lot of colleges/universities look for attorneys to teach pre-law classes, etc. for undergrads. You could look into that. Even as an adjunct position (part-time).

Re: What non law fields do Attorneys go into?

Basically anything however the problem is NON-legal employers dont want to hire law school graduates or licensed attorneys because they think "once a law firm position opens up, or they land a legal job paying more $$, they will quit in a heartbeat".

Prior to getting licensed, I worked as a Journalist for American Lawyer Media. We had a ton of ex-attorneys on staff working as Editors, Freelance Writers, etc. My salary was awful (under $35K) and there were part time law students working along with me who planned to stay on full time if they were unable to land a full time legal position. Where I work now (ins company), we have several attorneys working as Claims Reps (some are licensed out of state hence unable to practice law in NY).

Here is some more insight:

Thank you everyone. I am thinking of what options I might have if I am forced to go back to Florida for awhile. I am not licensed to practice there and I have no intention on taking that Bar Exam again.

I work in the test prep industry and tons of lawyers work for us on the LSAT and bar review products, in product development and marketing.

Def teaching. I did some field work at Northport high school while I was getting my undergrad for teaching Social Studies. Our class was talking to one of the social studies teachers and he was saying that he went to law school and at the time, in the early 90's, the only jobs he could get made around 17,000 a year because the market was flooded with lawyers. A friend told him that he should teach and he did. Northport has a mini court room at their high school and they have law and ethics classes that he teaches. I wouldn't be surprised if schools in Fl had the same thing.

I work as a Billing Coordinator for a major lawfirm in NYC. I'm not sure if Accounting is something you would be interested in but over the years I have had many co-workers who were attorneys.

Also, several of the Cabinet Positions in some colleges prefer a JD.

Check legal positions on USAjobs. Fed. Government attorney positions don't usually require that you pass the bar in that State, only that you've passed the bar somewhere.
