What Party Would You Rather Go To? (poll) UPDATE
Ok DH's cousin is getting married in Italy this weekend (obviously I am not going) but when they come back they are having an "at home" reception in NYC.
DH good friend and one of his GM recently got engaged and we received an invite to the engagement party in NJ.
We got the 2nd one in the mail and looked at our calendar and saw we were free, so I RSVP'ed right away with a yes. 4 days later we got the invite to the cousin's party and now we are stuck...
What would you do?
BTW: They are both at the same time.

Cousin. One family comes first, but also for your friend it is just the engagement party. You will still be able to go to a shower, and the actual wedding.
For DH's cousin this is the wedding. I think a wedding is much more important then an engagement party.

would DH's cousins get mad if you told them you had a prior commitment? are you close with them?
I would go to the one I RSVP'd to

If I RSVPed to the friend first, that is the one I would go to, unless I was super close with that particular cousin.
Is there any way you can go to part of both parties?

Not that close with the cousin, but DH's mother will get annoyed if we dont go to the family related one. I think that's the thing that is making the decision hard on DH.

I would go to the cousin's event becuase it's the wedding celebration and it's family and you will still get to celebrate the weding with the friend, KWIM?
Just call up the friend and explain, I'm sure they will understand

We were going to try to do that but one is in NJ and the other in NYC... they are too far apart.

I would go to the cousin's wedding reception. As others said, you will still be able to attend the friend's wedding.

I believe that the one you RSVP'd to first is the one you are committed to.
However, if its a cousin you are close to and/or you really want to go, I think its OK to call the friend up NOW and let them know that you have a family obligation the same day and didn't know/realize it and offer to have them over or for dinner to celebrate their engagement.
I'm sure the friend will understand.

Re: What Party Would You Rather Go To? (poll)
I'd also choose the cousin b/c they are family & b/c it's for their wedding & the friend is just an engagement & you will have a wedding to go to for them down the road.
The only thing that would make me say go to the friend's party is that you already rsvp'd.
I'd tell them that you had commited ot to the other party without knowing the actual day & now you havethe opffical invite & you have a conflict. If you can, offer to go out to dinner to celebrate with them at another time.

I would say the cousins wedding reception...seeing as you can not attend the wedding itself....but you have the opportunity to attend the other couples wedding later....
If this guy is such a good friend...he will probably understand.....

Re: What Party Would You Rather Go To? (poll)
Update:
DH called the friend to tell him that we cant make it but as soon as he saw on the caller ID that it was DH he was so excited to hear from him , and went right into the fact that he was so happy we could come and also asked DH to be a GM at his wedding so... we are off to NJ for the engagement party.
Thanks for all the advice!
