What planting/gardening Zone do we live in?

I'm not sure if it's Zone 6 or 7. Hard to tell from the map I found. TIA!

Typically, I've seen Long Island referred to as 7a or 7b.

As long as you're in the right neighborhood, the numbers don't matter that much.

I've grown things that call for 7b or 8 even without an issue, just by mulching heavily in winter.

Yes, be smart like Lorich. Don't add or remove anything till you get through the seasons. She has a treasure trove of plants that hadn't broken ground yet in spring. That would have been a shame, to lose those.

And plan your plantings a season ahead! It sounds like you're already on the right track with asking for the zone. It's so important to learn what kind of warmth, sun & water plants want to avoid killing them. Chat Icon

Re: What planting/gardening Zone do we live in?

Thanks! Chat Icon Good Advice! Well we have taken some things down already, but that is because they were completely out of control and not taken care of in years from the old owners. Chat Icon So we would like to plant things this fall if we can. We want easy plants, shrubs or bushes. We want it to be easy to take care of. Also, our house is in the sun all day. We really don't have to many trees blocking out the sun. Our front yard especially is in the sun from like 11am until the sun goes down. I've noticed already the plants that are there, some of them don't like it and start to wilt in the afternoon. Then I water them once the sun starts going down and they perk back up in like an hour or so. Any suggestions of shrubs, bushes or plants for the front? TIA! Chat Icon

Plants tend to wilt in the heat as a defense mechanism too. It's not necessarily a bad thing, and since they're not taking up water when they wilt, it can actually hurt them to water more. Then their roots are sitting in water which can lead to rot and disease.

I have full sun also, and had a lot of great options. Fall planting is great for bulbs - tulips, daffodils, lilies, crocus... You have to wait a few months for the payoff but what a great spring you'll have!
