Re: What reading level for a 5th grader?
I go by age & subject matter based on what I know about the child I am buying the book for.

I'd suggest you post this on the Teacher's Board, I'm sure someone there could easily and more importantly, correctly answer this question.

I would also ask the kid or parents what books they have been reading lately and look for similar level/style.
I was a reading machine as a child and was WELL above my reading level.

this is a very good idea. none of my third grade students are on a 3rd grade reading level (sad but true).

Re: What reading level for a 5th grader?
Unfortunately, age isn't really the best indicator. In my 5th grade class, I have students reading everywhere from a 1st grade reading level, up to 8th+
Def find out what the child normally reads from the parent.

agreed, but books in stores are NOT labeled this way. teachers do this to level their libraries. unless you know how to do this, i would look at the back of the book (most children's book have a grade "equivalent" posted in small numbers and letters near the ISBN code.
let me know if you need suggestiosn for titles or authors.

I teach 5th also and I definitely agree. There are a few series that are popular with the girls in my class tho. Even tho they are a "lower" level, my girls like Junie B Jones. Also, there is a series Candy Apple that they enjoy also.
