What to do - Friends that break your furniture...
OK...I don't know where to post this but I figured this was a good spot.
DH and I have a patio set on our deck. Its a loveseat/glider, a chair/glider and a regular chair. It's not brand new but it's all refinished and we take good care of it. It's made of wood and we love it.
Here's the problem: A couple of our guy friends are big guys...tall, heavy, big guys. So far, they've broken all 3 pieces of furniture by sitting on them. But it's not just sitting, it's rocking back and forth and jumping up and sitting down - hard...just kind of too much weight and wear and tear on the furniture.
So this past weekend DH had to reinforce and fix all 3 pieces of furniture. We told the biger guys not to sit on them because they were just fixed and not dry yet (the truth) and we had resin chairs out for everyone.
The sat on them again and one cracked. At this point I'm kinda mad and we realize we have to buy new furniture ...but its expensive and it annoys me that they cant sit on another chair.
What would you guys do?

Is hiding the chairs an option??
Like when they come over you put them in the basement or something?
That stinks!!

Go to their house and break their chairs! At least you might feel a little better Seriously though, I don't know how to stop them...

They're kind of big and a pain to move. It totally stinks I think we;re just going to have to buy new chairs and stuff...when these finally break for good.
Here's a picture of one of the chairs...Image Attachment(s):

How rude!!! I would:
A) hide the chairs B) tell them off (in the most polite way you can)
C) put up a sign that says, You Break It, You Buy It
But seriously, I would tell them next time NOT to sit in them, that they broke them!!
Are they aware that they broke them? did they say anything?

They are at least 250 lbs each...if not closer to 300 lbs.

Oh yeah they were sitting in them when they broke!!! They know they broke them. I think the problem is they are too 'big' - they weigh too much - I mean really - they are probably close to 250 lbs each. They dont offer to fix them or anything. They tell us that since the chairs were given to us and we didnt have to pay for them that we should be happy to even get ONE summer out of them! How rude is that?

whatever you do, be polite, as a "big" guy myself, it is embarassing to us to be told that our weight has something to do with furniture breaking

i think i would be a chair or two that you do not like for them to sit on if they are frequent visitors...

I know...I know...and they are 2 of our best friends. I havent said anything at all - I just dont know how to handle this.
On one hand I dont want my chairs to be broken...on the other hand I dont want to hurt their feelings.
Obviously they know they are big guys...that being said...once you break a chair, are you going to sit in it again? Or maybe sit in another chair? Maybe I will leave it up to DH to say something.
One of my best friends was 8.5 month pregnant and sitting on a metal lawn chair (albeit an old rusty chair...) and it SNAPED out from under her - the whole frame bent and she went crashing to the ground, legs in the air and laughing so hard she couldnt get herlsef us. She was so big it took 3 of us to get her off the floor. Poor girl! LOL

Herein lies the problem, yes absolutely they should know they are no petite flowers and to find an appropriate place to park their azzes. How old are they?
My father is and always has been a big man, tall and large just as you describe. He WILL NOT sit in certain chairs. Especially lawn chairs, I suspect he has done the same thing at our house. He will only sit in my dining room chair with the arms as it is sturdier than the others, etc.
Story.. when my parents walked through my childhodd home to buy it, my father broke one of the attic stairs. Well, they did buy the house and dad was never allowed up there again! LOL
Your DH should say something, those are not your run of the mill chairs you can pick up at Stop and Shop... they are really pretty.

I agree with donna about making it a joke.
but I think it's SO rude that they keep breaking them and don't offer to pay. It doens't matter how much or how little you paid, they should at l4east offer to repalce it or fix itor something, and not be dumb and selfish enough to KEEP sitting in them.
