Re: what to do first..

I would recommend start taking your folic acid. If you are a big coffee drinker like myself try to cut down a bit. Good luck!!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon

Anyone else with some info....

Is it necessary to goto the doctor first and speak to them about our decision to TTC....

I know folic acid is something i need to take right away - I take a multivitamin already do I need to take more ???

Can I just goto the store and buy folic Acid or do I need a prescription ???

you may want to go to your ob-gyn to do a "preconception visit", although it's not necessary. everyone's experience is different, but my ob-gyn didn't make a big deal out of it. she did my annual exam, spoke to me a little about how to conceive, recommended over-the-counter prenatal vitamins, and told me to follow up when i got preggers.

women of childbearing age should get 400mcg of folate a day. pregnant women should take 800mcg. if you buy prenatal vitamins they will have at least 800mcg (some have more, but more is not necessarily better - 800mcg is all you need, plus you get some from your diet).

hope that helps Chat Icon

ETA: you can get prenatal vitamins by prescription also, and if your insurance covers them it might be a way to save money. if not, you can just buy some at GNC or vitamin shoppe. the ingredients are the same.

Thank you... my multi-vitamin has 400mcg of folic acid so I guess thats OK for now - and the prenatal vitamins - are they expensive... Are the necessary ??
Sorry about all the questions - I have no clue and about any of this and we are not telling anyone we are going to start TTC so I have the boards for info...

THANK YOU>...
