What to do......I am CLEARLY not producing enough BM for this kid.......
.........as he is ALWAYS looking to nurse. It was a evening thing, now it's ALL DAY LONG he just can't get enough.
I have been pumping...... I only pump about 2 ounces each time (3 times is my goal, sometimes I can squeeze in a 4th session in a day) and I have been taking fenugreek (although not as consistantly as I should, but 3 pills 2 times a day and I try to remember the 3rd in the afternoon) and I see no increase. I even rented a hospital grade pump from the LC I used (Medela Symphony) and it isn't helping
He is so hungry that when I give a bottle of pumped BM he can chug 4-5 ounces no problem. And he can do that twice in a day
Oddly enough, during the night he is fine and seems satisfied Around 9ish, when I nurse him, he has no issue to eat & fall asleep. He stays down the 1st stretch about hours, then every 2-3 hours he is up after that.
But once 9 AM hits, he is RAVENOUS. He is gaining weight just fine as of his last doctors appointments so I must not be starving him, but he is always hungry.
Any hints you girls can offer? I so do not want him to have formula and I am getting stressed which I think isn't helping any. I go back to work in weeks and I can not possibly keep up with his demand at this rate.

Re: What to do......I am CLEARLY not producing enough BM for this kid.......
i feel for you. i'm having a similoar problem. i used to be able to pump without and problem, could get tons of milk, used to throw out the extra. but i am having a thyroid problem, its overactive, and i'm pon a beta blocker because of it. and the last month or two my suply has gone way down. i used to pump 1 or 2x per day to keep my bottle supply ready. now i am pumping 4-6 times a day and can't even refill if she drinks 2 bottles. its driving me batty. i also rented a hospital grade pump 4 days ago to try to help. i'm not seeing a difference yet, but i am hoping it will help because i don't want her on formula either, until she's a year.. then we just go to milk. (i've given her 2 ounces of formula the last few mornings just to give me some more time to get to the pump, and she's thankfully taking it without a fuss. but i would rather not have to give it to her) she's 9 months old now tohugh.

Are you sure he's hungry and not just looking for comfort? I would talk to his ped about it. Maybe he needs a pacifier.

I am guessing it's possible because he is preferring to be held more often now. He does use the pacifier, but VERY often he refuses it & keeps screaming until I let him BF. He more often wil take it if we are out & he is in the stroller & falling asleep & gets cranky.
This afternoon he was thrashing his head around & rooting like a madman about 20 minutes after BF. I swaddled him, gave him the pacifier & he is sleeping now since 1PM.
I have been having trouble getting him nap most days, so I kind of wonder if him being over tired makes him want the comfort of being attached to me. Unless he naps I deal with him latched on all day!!
We have a ped appointment on Tuesday. I will brave it out till then and speak about with them then.

When I feel my supply drop I eat oatmeal or cherrios every morning and drink Gatorage. That usually helps bring up th supply. Also there were times I thought my supply was low but it was really that ds just wanted to nurse. If you LO is taking long pulls then he is prob trying to drink but if he is just doing short fast sucks then he is prob just comfort nursing. Sometimes the pacifier just isn't good enough they just need mommy. Good luck

I had some problems too for awhile. I used fenugreek like you did. It helped me as well as eating oatmeal. My lactation nurse also recommented non-alcoholic beer help (I never tried it). For some reason root beer helped me. Also she also told me eating properly and not dieting and drinks lots and lots of water helps.

I eat Oatmeal probably 5 out of 7 mornings.
Mostly I guess he is just comfort sucking.....and I am going to have to work on that!!

i went through this too and found it was mostly a comfort thing. I know u said he is already taking a pacifier but can I recommend a different one to you. It is called gerber natural flex. The nipple itself moves in and out when the baby sucks on it so it stimiulates the sucking of the breast. Here is a pic of the pacifier. you can only get them at target at babies r us. Give it a try.
