what to expect (ent related)
So dd has had 3 bad ear infections and when we went yesterday to her 2 week check on her last one the doctor said she still has fluid in her one ear so he wants us to take her to a ENT for them to look into it more.. I made an appt with Dr. Litman in Port Jefferson for next week But what should I expect to happen at that appt, Also what may come of it? I know DD pediatrician said they may just want to use some nasal sprays?
Also DD is 16 months and has NO words, she understands and comprehends everything you say and can follow simple instructions but she doesn’t speak could this be because of her ears?? Ok so this is so long I’m just trying to get any info I can on this.

Re: what to expect (ent related)
we took DS at about 14 months to the ENT -
they looked in his ears and checked the pressure. they also did a hearing test and a test to check mobility of the ear drum.
he had fluid so he was treated again with antibiotics and we followed up in 2 weeks.
at the two week followup - no fluid so we were seen again in 2 months. at that point, more fluid, more antibiotics (that was july - strange time for ear infection) so we were told that if there was fluid at THAT followup, we would do tubes.
thank god, no ear infections since last july! he outgrew it at about 14/15 months

Re: what to expect (ent related)
DD just got tubes put in last Thurs. She is 21 months old and has had 14 ear infections. At our first ENT appt (almost a year ago), he checked her ears, did a hearing test and checked ear pressure. My DD had fluid on and off for months at a time. He is a bit on the conservative side so we just kept having to go back to follow up. My DD speaks like a parrot so he said it was not affecting her speech so he was reluctant to do tubes. After almost a year of ear infections constantly, we decided on the tubes. After he went in her ears he said it was the right choice as she had what they call "glue ear", apparently thickened fluid that is a glue like consistency which was preventing the fluid in her ears to drain. The ENT told us that children under 2 can't be given nasal sprays...don't know if that's a fact or his opinion....I had asked about that. Good luck.

Re: what to expect (ent related)
Expect to wait... that office has long wait times...but they do spend time with each patient.
DS saw litman once.
They will try a hearing test - in a room, with her on your lap. There will be a duck on the left and a bunny on the right. They will make noise one at a time and see if she looks. DS failed b/c he didn't car that they were making noise. It wasn't loud enough to scare him and he didn't really understand.
DS had many ear infections so they set us up for tubes.
They basically will look in her ears.
DS had a nose issue - they did a spray thing, sort of uncomfortable but very quick.
