What to Expect When You're Expecting... worth reading?

I'm thinking about picking up this book, but I'm wondering if anyone read it and what they thought? My sister said it was helpful, but that it also often pointed out what could "go wrong" at different stages and sometimes just made her more worried than anything.

I'm nervous enough already...I'm only 5 weeks and am analyzing every symptom AND lack of symptoms... Chat Icon .

Would you recommend this book, or any other book?

It does make you freak. I wasn't old this piece of advice until I was already halfway through the book. A bunch of girls told me the book 'Your Pregnancy, week by week' (I think that's the title) was much better. One girl even gave me a copy. It was much better.

I have both books and I think I like Your Pregnancy Week by Week a little better. What to Expect... was also very informative but maybe too informative for some.

"Your Pregnancy week by week" is much better. It is more user friendly. "What to expect..." scared the crap out of me! I use it sometime for a reference guide but that is it.

I found that if I have a specific question or concern that What to Expect is a helpful resource. In the beginning I was reading it just to read it and it freaked me out way too much. I found that week by week is a great book that you will want to read each week.

Re: What to Expect When You're Expecting... worth reading?

It didn't make me freak out, but I am one of those people that assume all is fine unless the doctor tells me otherwise.

It is a LOT of information, however. I started reading it sequentially, but it was a little overwhelming. I mostly use it a s a reference now, and look topics up in the index. I think it worth having.

I would recommend this book. I'm a worry wart about everything and this book didn't freak me out. It keeps telling you in every chapter every PG is different. I'd rather know about everything than wonder what could this be??? I read it religiously up until the 6 months chapter I'm in my 7th month. The reason why is I get so much info from my dr now that I really don't grab it as much to read. Every now and then when I question something I'll grab it and see what it says.

Re: What to Expect When You're Expecting... worth reading?

I definitely liked "Your Pregnancy Week by Week" much better...I believe the author's last name is Curtis. I purchased mine in Jan, so I dont think it is out of print??

I took "What to Expect' out of the library early on in my PG and I didnt really like it. If you use your local library I would browse through it first before u purchase it.

Re: What to Expect When You're Expecting... worth reading?

The entire What to Expect series seems to be meant to make expectant and already-mothers feel scared, guilty, and freak out over every single little thing.

I agree... Your pregnancy week by week Chat Icon

I like "Your Pregnancy Week by Week" better also. For one thing, "What to Expect" tells you very little about the baby's development, and I wanted to know what was happening to the baby too.

Some people love "What to Expect". I am not one of them, but it does have some good information. I didn't read it much at the beginning though--it freaked me out. And their suggested diet is a little harsh IMO.
