What to expect with an internal sono?
So from what ive been hearing when i go for my first apt on the 26th i will most likely have a internal sono? (correct me if im wrong please)
what do i expect? ive never had one and im kinda scared and nervous.

You sit in a chair with your feet in the stirrups and they put a condom and lube on this big wand type thing. It doesnt hurt at all....Ive had trillions of them... but you may just want to warn DH of the "wand"...mine was a little freaked LOL.

lol thanks for the heads up. im just worried about it hurting. the last time i went for a pap i was in so much pain and i was never before i think maybe she was a little rough if thats possible. so i was just a little worried that this would be worse.
i hope im able to hear the heart beat or at least see something.

nah.. its not a speculum exam so it really shouldn't hurt at all.

I am very sensitive during gyno appointments too, but i didn't find that the internal sono hurt at all. It felt a little weird at first, but i didn't think it hurt.

I didnt have internal sono until I was 6 weeks, so didnt have at first appointment. No biggie the sono, they put you in stirrups, and then its just a wand that they insert into the vaginal canal, they put a condom like thing on it and some jelly on it. The wand isnt any big or scarey.
eta: the thing that was uncomfortable for me was when the doctor did the hand internal check.. to make sure baby was okay..

ill be 5w5d when i have my apt. so im hoping they will do it.
im going to my primary doc. tomorrow he happens to be a previous employer and friend so hes going to do some blood work so ill have a better idea of where im at. and he knows the ob so im hoping hell call and ask her to do a sono!

You prob wont hear the heartbeat then. I didnt even see the heartbeat that early. All I saw was a spot!!!

im just thinking i might hear something since i tested so early and my test was so dark positive that i might be further along then i think but who knows. at this point if all i see is a spot ill be happy something to validate it ya know

He did mine the first appointment with both pregnancies to confirm pregnancy.

Internal sonos aren't bad at ALL, and this is coming from someone who freaks out with any and all gynecological procedures... 
My RE's office gave me the option of inserting the wand myself, which I was much more comfortable with. If you feel this would help, you may want to ask about it. My thing is that I like to be in control.

i don't think they'll be able to tell you 'where you're at' via a blood test... to know that info - they would have to do an ultrasound and measurements....
the u/s only hurts me when they try to find my ovaries. my LEFT ovary is always HIGH UP for some reason and when they 'hunt' for it - it HURTS....so much so that the last time - the doc said forget it - i don't want to hurt you....

they can - yes, but they can also be VERY off....trust me - mine were. they ping ponged me back and forth - behind a week, ahead a week until they finally got a measurement.

Does everyone automatically get a sono their first visit? I guess it depends on the office. My first visit is in 2 weeks- i will be 7 or so weeks pregnant and they won't do a sonogram. I have to make a separate appointment to see the sono tech

My first visit was at 8 weeks to just talk and they made me come in the week after for a sono. They said it stresses many women out not to see a HB or anything at all on the sonogram if they get it done too early, so they wait for that reason. Good luck!

I think every dr is different and also depending on your certain situation. My ob did the first appt at 8 weeks and I had a sono and an exam that day. The internal definitely didnt hurt. I had one at 8 wks and 9 wks. I will say that I enjoy the external sonos a LOT more!

I think it depends upon the way the office is structured...my office has sonogram techs in house and no sonogram machines in the exam rooms so its all by appointment...I have my first visit at 6 weeks, then made an appointment for 8 weeks with a sono appointment...on the flip-side, my cousin's doctor does a sono at each appointment and its usually done by the doctor unless they are scheduled otherwise...

This was me exactly.... when i tested, it was so dark, that i was a lot further along. I called and about a week later they ask me to come in for a sonogram. According to that i was 6 weeks, 4 days. Ten days later (tyhis Friday) I will be going for the first doctor appointment. They did a separate sono. and dr. visit. It might depend on the office because mine did the sono. but it was probably just to confirm where i was ....
