What to prepare for this weekend for your kids, due to the bad weather
Think about what you need to get done before the wind begins to pick up. Tie down things on your deck, brings kid's toys inside.
But, think about what you need in the event of a power outage. Do you have enough food for your child(ren) OUTSIDE of your fridge? The power grid where I live has been having a lot of problems lately, and we lose power often in normal storms, so I have a cooler from my attic. I will be picking up ice and putting certain essentials in there, just so I don't have to open the fridge or freezer.
Also, are the batteries in your flashlights working? Do you have a battery operated nightlight for your kids room? (If they are used to light, they won't understand that a storm now left them in the dark. In fact, it can help intensify a fear of storms.) We have those 'tap lights' for these situations.
Can you handle being without power for an hour or half a day? Chances are, most will keep their power on. Winds are expected to be 40ish mph, with lots of rain. They can gust even higher. It's tough to be an adult during a crappy weather day, but how hard is it to be a parent?
Also, make sure you have enough games inside to keep them busy without you wanting to pull your hair out. This is not meant to scare. It's mainly just going to be a crappy day on Saturday.
Hanna's track is fast, which means she won't hang around too long. YAY!! Suffolk will be worse than Nassau and Nassau will be worse than the City. Those in Carolina should be prepared for even worse conditions.
Your resident meteorologist, Kelly (I will be online after 2am, and throughout the overnight, to update)

Thanks for posting. DD is all set for food & formula but I should check our flashlights and put my deck chairs in the garage.
Thankfully we took our tent down yesterday.

It should be starting on the overnight, so you could be driving into work with some rain and wind. The worst of it is supposed to be tomorrow afternoon and evening. Depending on when you get out of work, then it could be poopy!
It's not going to be a "get off the road" kind of thing. But like Sophie said above, she'll take different roads because flooding can be a concern. And the bridges around NYC can be a bit tough to cross in an SUV.

Re: What to prepare for this weekend for your kids, due to the bad weather
I said it on another post and I don't think it is going to be that bad. 50 mph winds aren't terrible. My parents get those winds and worse out on the North Fork.
I think it is being exaggerated well I hope it is anyway
I am just putting my umbrella away and I am heading out east for the weekend. My parents house will run on a generator if the power goes out but I am more excited then nervous.

Re: What to prepare for this weekend for your kids, due to the bad weather
You just helped me decide to switch ds's bday party to sun. I was going to wait until tomorrow morning to see how bad it really is but I think I'll just call everyone tonight to let them know we'll have it on sun

Re: What to prepare for this weekend for your kids, due to the bad weather
I went into my parents backyard next door and put some stuff under this big awning they have. I got food and water but you just reminded me to get some batteries. Oh and I gotta deflate DS's kiddie pool. I'll do this later this afternoon...

I just read this statement so don't panic everyone.
Periods of rain. High 75F. Winds SE 15-25 mph. Chance of rain 80%. Rainfall possibly over an inch. Higher gusts possible.

Good reminder to take my umbrella down from my patio furniture. It was bad enough having to pay for a new glass table but cleaning up that much glass as the wind was blowing was horrible.

I'm not nervous. If I wasn't a mommy I'd be at the beach. (It's what I used to do) Are we being hit by a hurricane? No. Like I said, it's just going to be a crappy day. Crappy does not mean scary.
I'm just reminding everyone about loose things on the decks, or in their backyards. Many parents keep their children's pools outside, with a few trucks and toys.
There are many moms on here in the same power grid as me. We have lost power numerous times over the past few months. We really need to be prepared. That's all.
