what to wear to a sweet 16, when you're way older than 16?
The last time I went to a sweet 16, I actually WAS 16  so I'm not really sure what to wear. Is a straight, solid-color (dark blue) dress that hits above the knee with black tights, black heels, and a black 3/4 sleeve sweater good enough? Or should I wear something fancier?

I think it depends on where it is being held. I went to one at the Swan Club a few years ago and wore a cocktail dress. I have been to others and just worn a "Dressy" work dress.

I went to one in a hotel somewhere in Suffolk when I was 29 & I wore a sleeveless, knee length, brown lace with pink lining sheath dress , with a brown shrug & burgundy closed toe ankle strap shoes.
It was the same dress I wore to my rehearsal dinner and an outdoor morning wedding.

We had our daughters sweet 16 on a Saturday night at a catering hall. I wore a cocktail dress but I didn't expect my friends or adult relatives to go all out. Most wore plain dresses with tights, one wore a really nice sweater with a skirt and boots, a few people even wore dress pants.
It didn't matter to me, as long as everyone had a good time.
