What type of jarred tomato sauce?

My mother is grossed out that I use jarred sauce sometimes (she's Italian), but I just don't have time to make homemade lately, but they're usually either too bland, or sweet, or salty, etc.

Do you have a favorite?

Re: What type of jarred tomato sauce?

i've been using Rao's marinara sauce, not too bad,
i just tried the Rao's tomato basil and liked that one better, a little more flavor

Re: What type of jarred tomato sauce?

I'm sorry, but I see nooooo reason to use jarred sauce.....it is the easiest thing in the world to make and you can freeze it and always have sauce within minutes.....

All you need to do is saute a little olive oil and garlic...usually 1-2 cloves of garlic a can of crushed tomatoes or puree.....I usually use one can of puree and one can of crushed tomatoes...., fresh basil l, salt, , pinch of oregano and cook....if I am making a batch to freeze i double the recipe.

More times than not, I make it without meat, but you can easilly make a big old batch of meatballs, cook them and freeze them in portions or right in the sauce.

I use extra garlic and basil when I am making a quick sauce to give it more flavor and it is done by the time the pasta cooks....

pre made sauces have soooo many preservatives, high in sodium, some high in sugar etc. I gag at the thought...Chat Icon

Silver Palate isn't too bad and it was surprisingly cheap last week at Waldbamark.

We use Francesco Rinaldi. I admit I am not a food snob. We make our own as a treat on weekends sometimes, but it's not something we have time to do on a regular basis.

Victoria!!! I hate jarred sauce as well but in a pinch I use this or Rao's which is almost identical in taste. Both are pricey though.

I'm sorry but this sound very judgemental, as the OP I also use Jarred sauce. I am not italian and it was norm in my house just to buy the jar.

Re: What type of jarred tomato sauce?

Raos, Victoria's, Vincents.

Last night I threw some in a pot of penne..it was very good. I also put some locatelli on it.

Took the rest for lunch.

I make my own sauce and freeze it but sometimes it's easier to open the jar. I work about 60 hours a week and sometimes there is just no time to cook..these jarred sauces are good in a pinch. Sometimes I don't have the ingredients to make sauce as well.

Re: What type of jarred tomato sauce?

My mother is off the boat Italian. She doesn't believe in jarred sauce.

I would never hear the end of how "fast & simple" it is to make your own sauce if she ever saw the "just in case" jarred sauce I have in my pantry. I told DH to NEVER make mention of it in front of my mother.

I usually have one jar of Vincents or Victorias tucked away in the pantry, for those nights I just don't feel like making homemade sauce.

Sometimes I don't have tomatoes or garlic in my fridge. There is nothing wrong with not making fresh sauce EVERYTIME you make pasta. Sure it tastes better - but those nights I get home at 8:00 pm & I still need to straighten up, make lunches etc...the LAST thing I'm thinking is fresh sauce.

Re: What type of jarred tomato sauce?

We like Francesco Rinaldi and Ragu Meat Sauce. My father would NEVER eat jarred sauce but the first time he had my baked ziti he said he really liked it. It was made with Francesco Rinaldi sauce.

To each his own but I personally never liked my homemade sauce and went back to jarred sauce.

Re: What type of jarred tomato sauce?

Thanks - I'll try a few that were mentioned....

trust me I prefer homemade too, but to make a good sauce imo, it does take me time I know everything gets thrown in a pot, but I don't want to be watching a pot of sauce some weekends.

This may sound lazy, but during the week, after a long day at work, even when it's frozen - if I forget to take it out ahead, it's so much easier to open a jar...sometimesChat Icon

Re: What type of jarred tomato sauce?

Honestly it is ALMOST just as easy to make a quick homemade one.

(not to be a know it all lol it just tastes much better)

I always have garlic in the house, and if you dont have fresh parsley, oregeano, basil you can always add any of those spices (with garlic...even the powder) to a can of crushed tomatoes, add a little oil, s&p...it is quick, easy, cheaper and tastier Chat Icon

Re: What type of jarred tomato sauce?

LOL You guys can go ahead and make your sauce, but I am glad that I am from a family that is ok with eating jarred sauce. LOL I

I like 4 (5?) brothers and Classico. I'd love to try Raos but it's too pricey.

Drama could start over whtat type of tomatoes to buy!

I've tried to make sauce and it always tastes blah.

I miss my HS b/f's father's sauce - he made it every sunday.
