What wakes kids up in the middle of the night , if not pain ? ( not newborns)

My DD still does not sleep though the night consistently ( she's 16 months) ...Maybe 1-2x a week if that...

It's not hunger ( though she will drink to soothe) , and it can't ALWAYS be teething or a pain of some sort...

Is there a scientific reason, of what would wake a child out of a deep sleep



Thats part of the reason that I can't follow through w/ CIO most of the time ( I am always thinking that if she is waking up out of a deep sleep, something must be wrong )

Stacey, every now/then Gracie still does this. I really think its night terrors b/c she talks in her sleep but a few times if I go in there & comment on what she said she'll roll over/still be asleep.

Unless its teeth/molars?

Do you always go in there?

Children have sleep cycles just like adults - intermittent light and deep sleep cycles. Everyone, adults and children, wake up a few times a night during the light sleep cycle, but 90% of the time, we all fall right back to sleep. For some children, though, particularly those who aren't the best at self-soothing, it isn't so easy to fall right back to sleep.

This is how it was explained to me by my pediatrician
