What words was/is your 14 month old saying??
Jacob is 14 months and basically says no coherent words. Babbles and babbles and babbles all day long, but no specific words. No mama, (directed at me) no dada EVER..hasnt said that yet at all.
He does understand though, If i ask where Kasey is, or go get kasey (the dog) he goes and chases after her or looks around for her. Doesnt say "up" while standing and holding his arms up for me to pick him up. Doesnt say "no", NOTHING... I talk all day, show him things.. point things out. Nothing.
He picks up the phone presses buttons puts it to his ear and babbles into it. Also takes the remote and points it at the TV.
I know children speak in their own time and at their own pace, just wondering though, anyone find this odd??

Re: What words was/is your 14 month old saying??
I think it sounds totally normal.
Babbling is a good thing, does he sound like he is having a conversation in his own language? From what it sounds like he does so he understands the concept of give and take in a conversation.
I think at this stage maybe 5 or 6 words is considered average. Of course some babies at this stage might have 20 words already.
When they do evaluate them for speech delay they also take into consideration words they understand and he sounds like he knows what you are talking about and referring to.
Girls also speak earlier than boys.
Mention it to your ped but he would probably not be concernced at this point.

Re: What words was/is your 14 month old saying??
Hi! - (I'm Tyler's mom - we met at last week's GTG). I was starting to worry a little too - DS is not saying much either. He says ma ma and da da but not usually when he's looking at us. I think he started saying Uh Oh. But that's really it. He's a big babbler though, and he likes to "sing" a lot (no coherent words). I've heard that at this age its still considered normal. I think if he doesn't start saying more by 18 months I'll really start to worry. I'm sure your son is fine (and he's adorable by the way!).

Noah doesn't speak at all, nor does he really appear to be interested in anything except toys.
I don't think he is ready, soon soon I keep saying!!!

Sydney is a little younger than Jacob, she will be a year in about a week and half but she still says absolutely nothing except Ga and Ca and a few other random syllables but no mama, dada or anything. But like Jacob, she understands tons of commands so I am not worrying YET...

Re: What words was/is your 14 month old saying??
My son is 11 months old, and I was worried about the same thing-- he says dada but not necessarily to my DH, mama occasionally but again not necessarily to me, and a lot of da, ca, ga, ba, but nothing with any meaning.
I DID take him for a speech eval, and the speech pathologist told me to forget it-- at this age, he said they are far more concerned with "receptive" language (i.e. what words they can understand) vs "expressive" language. My DS has no problem with receptive language--- there are probably at least 50 names of objects he knows (like if I ask "where's the ...." he will gesture toward it, or go get it or whatever), and he understands lots of phrases like "Daddy's in the kitchen" or "Give mommy the... " or "Let's go change a diaper", etc. He gives hugs if you ask for one, etc.
So the speech pathologist said that as long as he's understanding words, that's the big concern, and expressive language will come later. FM me if you want any other info!!

Re: What words was/is your 14 month old saying??
Bella was and is a HUGE babbler. She always said dada and sometimes mama, but uptil until the last couple of months and really this past month nothing super coherent. (She is turning 18 months next week)
She is just now saying Up when she wants to be picked up, and her speech has taken leaps and bounds. (I do, All done, I see you, thank you, your welcome, milk please, juice, etc)
I would say after 16 months is when I really started to recognize what she was saying. She has always had a lot to say, but now her message is getting across.
I understand 3-4 words of what she is saying, but sometimes she'll look and me and say like 3-4 sentences of lord knows what and I am like what???
You'll see in time. More than speaking is that he understands when you ask where the dog is and can connect the two...that's great...

Re: What words was/is your 14 month old saying??
I forgot to mention something else the speech pathologist told me! Does your son gesture? Like does he point or reach to indicate somethng he wants? That's nonverbal communication and also a good sign.
Until the speech guy asked about it, I never had really paid attention, but then I noticed that DS does this ALL the time-- gesturing toward something he wants (stuff that is out of reach), saying "da!! da!" or whatever.

Re: What words was/is your 14 month old saying??
I also agree with everyone else that I wouldn't be worried yet. I am a special ed teacher and I know that the speech therapists in my school have always said that you don't really get worried until after 18 months, and I've heard of a lot of kids' language "exploding" around that age. He might wake up one day repeating every word you say and just knock your socks off.
I do think that it's great that you do work with him on his speech, and that will pay off one day. The fact that he shows the receptive language means that he's absorbing it, it's just going to be time probably before he uses it!
Also, have you seen a progression in his babbling? Are there more complex sounds in there, and things like C/K sounds, S sounds, and things like that? Even if it isn't words that he is saying, you should hear a progression of his babbles as his tongue and mouth develop!

Re: What words was/is your 14 month old saying??
Sydney will be 14 months soon and she is not talking much and isnt walking on her own yet either. We went to the ped today since she has another ear infection and I mentioned that I wondered if she is behind in both of these areas b/c she now has her 6th ear infection.
My ped said no that at her age it is too soon to tell and Sydney does say a few words - mama, dada, up, ball, hi, bye. She also seems to understand everything else and she signs and gestures alot too.

Re: What words was/is your 14 month old saying??
At almost 15 months Katie says a lot of words, I lost count at about 50.
But she doesn't walk and has always been behind on her gross motor stuff. All babies do things at there own pace- I wouldn't worry!
