What would be the benefit of getting DD a formal Asperger's/HFA Diagnosis?
DD is currently diagnosed with ADHD and anxiety. For years, I have felt that she has had Aspergers. I had a consultation with a center that specializes in ASD in girls. Based on all previous evals, the Doctor feels that she has Aspergers. Although obviously not confirmed, because current evals not done yet.
What would a formal diagnosis do for her? Would medical insurance cover any therapies with a diagnosis?

Depending on your health insurance, you could possibly get some therapies covered by your insurance. A diagnosis would also allow you to get her any needed special education services should she need them from the school. If she needs an IEP or a 504 plan, they would require a written diagnosis from the doctor.

I never had a diagnosis for my son until he was 8. He was always just labeled as "multiply disabled". He always received services in school, AND through insurance. The school does NOT require a diagnosis to provide any services. Nor does health insurance. They provide the services based on your child's needs after having an evaluation. Having an autism diagnosis does allow them to not be able to LIMIT the number of sessions for therapy though, since a new law was passed. In the past, if the condition couldn't be cured, they didn't have to treat it beyond xxx amount of visits.
A diagnosis does help with services through the state through OPWDD. But they need a low IQ or a low adaptive behavior score to qualify.

There are certain things, however, the school is not allowed to diagnose even through their evaluation. My son has ADHD, was evaluated for learning disorders and did not have any. The school put him on a 504 plan, but would only do so with written diagnosis from our doctor.

A 504 is totally different than receiving special education services. Wrightslaw.com can explain the difference. It's basically a civil rights law though. Children with a 504 don't usually receive services such as a self contained class, speech, OT, PT, counseling, etc. under a 504. (I say don't usually because some do, but it's not common) I know a lot of kids with 504s that have peanut/tree nut allergies, ADHD, etc. They are given certain accommodations, but they are not typically provided with services as noted above. IEP and special education services are provided under IDEA which protects them with/without a diagnosis. If there is no concrete diagnosis, usually their "classification" as noted on the IEP is multiply disabled, speech impaired, could be orthopaedically impaired if they have motor issues, etc. Even if there is a diagnosis, they can still be classified as multiply disabled.
and yes, the school doesn't typically diagnose (i.e.label). They are there to evaluate, review the findings, and provide the services required to meet the educational needs of the child.
