What would you do? - Long!

My next door neighbor - who is a bit "prickly" has 2 dogs that they keep outside for most of the year (poodle & golden lab) Anyway I hvae just started once again to smell the dog poo. We just moved in late last summer and the smell was pretty bad, now it's only May and is starting to smell. They have a "dog run" (cage) right next to my property and that is where the dogs poop and seem to live most of the time.

They are such an odd couple, she always looks like she's on Zanax and he is an alcoholic and to be honest he give me the creeps.

How do I approach them about the dog poo? Don't even get me started on the barking - drives me nuts. I know it's not the dogs fault. They also have 2 cats that crap in my yard, on the grass and don't cover it up - which is very unusual for cats. Again not the cats fault - I have two of my own, but they are indoor

Any advice would be welcome, I know I'm probably gonna end up having to over there and talk.

First of all, I would talk to some of the other neighbors. Then, if you want to approach them you could or call the town and complain. They may send someone from the Board of Health or something to investigate.

Good luck...we have neighbors across the street whose dog barks day and night, I couldn't imagine the smell of poop on top of that.Chat Icon

I would definitely talk to them, and if that does not work tell them that you have no issues calling the ASPCA.Chat Icon

Re: What would you do? - Long!

i don't get it though... since it's on their property, is there anything you can actually do about it? Chat Icon

Yes this would bother me a lot as well, but if you talk to them about it and they say too bad... what can really be done? I'm just curious because i wouldn't even know where to start next! Chat Icon

Well if she can smell the poo, and they are not cleaning it, then it is a health & safety issue for the dogs.Chat Icon

I would call the ASPCA and see if they can approach the people to educate them about dog health/sanitation.

The only thing that I am nervous of is that they'll know it was me and I'm not that confrontational (except when I have PMS!) Maybe I should just get DH to go round and say something

Yes, I think the ASPCA would be interested in the fact that the dogs are out 95% of the time and how they are living in their own crap Chat Icon

That's definitely a case of neglect and something that the ASPCA can take a look into- they can go there, talk to them for you so you don't have to get involved (tell them to say it's an anonymous complaint)... and they can get them to clean it up- they give them one or two chances to do the right thing, they come back and check and if they have not done the right thing they will take the dogs and bring them to a non-kill shelter so they can find a good home.

They can think whatever they want but in reality- if you call the ASPCA- and make an anonymous complaint there is no way for them to know with certainty that it was you.

I think that's the best way-- these people do NOT seem 100% and I would be nervous approaching them and I don't think it will do any good.

You don't have to leave a name. Even if you do leave a name, your neighbors would never find out it was you.

I would def do it asap.
