What would you do re: DH business trip
DH has a business trip he is suppossed to go on when I will be 36 weeks 3 days pregnant. The trip will be to Chicago. He said he can get out of it, but obviously it is better for his career if he goes. In the back of my mind I am worried about the baby coming early and him missing the birth. But then again most first time mothers go late not early. What would you do? Would you tell him to stay home? He will be returing when I am 37 weeks.

I would have him go. Chances are, even if you went that early, he would be able to catch a flight back in time, while you are still laboring.

Re: What would you do re: DH business trip
Actually all of my friends, including myself went early with our first, aside from one. BUT...we didn't go that early. I mean about 5 days or a week or so.
As long as you are not high risk or have any other pregnancy related issues that can make you go early - I would tell him to go.

I would have him go. If you did go that early, he could hop on a flight.

I would have him go too.... Personally I think it would give you a nice opportunity to have some U time all by yourself.
As long as he keeps his phone handy and numbers accessible.... I think that you will be fine!

ITA too. Just have him keep his phone handy and numbers for airline & taxis. If this is what you feel is best for you, then definitely have him prepared and make sure he has a vague idea of the airline's schedule so he knows what he is in for if he tries to get home.

Re: What would you do re: DH business trip
I would let him go because Chicago isnt a long flight and flights between NYC to CHI are numerous and frequent. I think he could make it back in time. I actually have a friend from CHI who was in NYC when he got a call that his wife was in labor. He made it back in time

I agree...i hate for DH to travel, but I don't think you should be too concerned with having the baby at that point!

I agree. I went early with my DS, who is my first. I started having contractions the night of my 37 week appointment, had them for 3 more days and then gave birth. I know this is probably unusual, but I think I would have been a mess if my DH wasn't home with me.

Re: What would you do re: DH business trip
I think if you were due over the winter months I'd ask him not to go - just in case he gets stuck in CHI with weather/snow/ice storms. But because you're due in May weather shouldn't be a problem and he should be able to get a quick flight home, hopefully... Tell him to keep his phone charged and ready at all times!

Re: What would you do re: DH business trip
IMO - I would really want him to go on the trip. If he is OK with the small chance of missing the birth, then I would be fine with it too.
My DH hates blood and Dr's. He isn't the guy who will be watching or taking pictures. He would literally pass out. I'm also pretty independent, and would be fine to go it alone (or with mom if necessary)

Re: What would you do re: DH business trip
If it's much better for him to go for his career than I would be ok with him going. But if it's not that big of a deal I would rather him not go that close. Yes he could hop a flight but it's not like planes leave every hour on the hour. Some labors go very quickly so to me it just would not be worth the risk. Can you wait until you are much closer to that time to decide if he's going? Your doctor will be able to tell you if you are starting to dilate which could give you an idea.

Re: What would you do re: DH business trip
My DH was away on a business trip with his dad when I was 38 weeks and I ended up having an emergency c-section( high BP) and he had to fly back right away, thankGod he wasn't to far away and was able to get to the hospital and hour before I had DD. Very stressful, but things like that happen, ya never know......

Re: What would you do re: DH business trip
Julie, are your parents near by?? Can they have 'labor duty' while he's gone just incase? Let them be on call for that short span of a few days. I highly doubt you'll go that early but you'll know as you get closer and your OB visits get more frequent. I don't think they'd even be checking for dilation at that point.
I think it's safe for him to go, just make sure his cell is reachable and that he has a contingency plan incase of emergency.

Re: What would you do re: DH business trip
Thanks everybody. It is not a very important trip but I don't want to hold him back for no reason. He can decide up to 2 weeks before the trip so I think we are going to wait until then to decide what to do.
