What would you do? (teacher related)
I am currently teaching 5th & 6th grade in a catholic school in Garden City. I love the children, although this is not my dream job. It is tons of work and I have 93 students, which I am still trying to get used to. I have previously worked in public schools teaching only one class, although nothing had ever been permanent. Anyways, I just heard that my school that I worked at last year, which I loved, is going to need a teacher from Jan-June. There is no guarantee that I would get this position, although it is a possibility. I guess my question is would you leave from the catholic school to take the public school position? I just would feel so bad to leave my students at this point in the year. Opinions please =) Thanks so much!!

Re: What would you do? (teacher related)
I interviewed for four years for a School Social Worker position. I was offered a 10 week leave replacement and I left my job at a hospital and took the chance.
Like you said, there are no guarantees in any of these positions. But I am still in the same posistion almost three years later. Had I not taken the chance, I would still be at my crappy hosptial job.
I am soooo much happier.

i would take it. a leave replacement is often a great way to get into a district job. in my district they offered most of the teachers who were doing leave replacements f/t positions for the next year.

It is a risk with possible reward if you are willing to take it and think you would be happier, go for it. Good luck

Re: What would you do? (teacher related)
honestly, if you leave the Catholic school in January you are going to burn some bridges. I don't know if I would make the leap unless the other thing was a guaranteed FT job in the future. What happens in June??? If the other job isn't FT, you are totally back to square one, except now Catholic schools aren't even an option.
IMO, the elementary market is too saturated to risk it without a guarantee past June.

I started out as a leave replacement - been at my district for a few years now!
Negotiate that if the person you replace does not come back - that your job is a tenure track position

Re: What would you do? (teacher related)
I think whatever you need to do to get into the TRS is worth it.
If you can swing it financially, or you can sub next year (if you don't need the insurance)

Re: What would you do? (teacher related)
my friend was in the same position last year she left the catholic school she had worked in for three years for a leave replacement (dec-june) - she ended up getting a full time position in sept in another district you have to figure out if youd like to be in public school or if you like working in catholic school either way - Good Luck!
