Word of mouth. Having demo parties if it is a bus like pampered chef. Donating products to local schools and churches with your bus card attached.

I agree with donating to school craft fairs. I know people that have advertised on diner m,enus, left a catalog at the nail salon.

Yep. Done all of this. Put business cards at local delis, grocery stores and reached out through facebook.

Re: what would you say is the most effective way to market yourself if you have a direct marketing business (pampered chef, etc.)
I sold candles for years (helped me pay for my wedding and buy my house). WHat I did was brought catalogues and samples with me EVERYWHERE. I never went anywhere without my tealights. The grocery store, the bank, I would send them into friends offices, my mom's offices. I would also offer free shipping and products for referrals. That really worked.
Do craft fairs, put a basket together and enter church/town/school raffles. I would. Ask your local schools (preschools and baby classes count too!) if they want to do a fundraiser.
I would have an open house. I would invite prior customers, neighbors, family, friends, etc over for a cash and carry (selling old product that I would use for demos at a discounted price) and a demo, offering chances in raffle (for product) for those that booked a party that day.
You need to be just on the nice side of assertive in making calls of all your customers and contacts.
I've been out of it for a while so this was just off the top of my head. Good luck! I hope this helps.
