whats a good amount to give for an engagement gift?
My friend is having her party this weekend. Its so hard right now that all the bills are coming in from christmas and all our other bills, and we have to put money aside for our mortgage...ugh...it never ends.. Do you think $100 is too cheap? Its at a nice catering hall... or $150?

Seriously, I think that you should what you can. If you're in a tough sitch right now then give what you can. IMO I think $100 is enough.

You really are not expected to give at engagment parties, so 100 is fine. Have fun!!

What about a savings bond? You could buy one for $100, but it would be worth more!

Yes...really no gift is suppose to be brought to the party, and close family and friends that want to give will mail it to the bride(party or no party)
I only know this from watching the knot marathons.

Actually, if you go by the ettiquette books, this is true. However, since we live in a place where everything is overdone, I think most people in this area expect a gift.
We had a small e-party and didn't expect gifts, but on average, I would say most gifts were about $50-150. But, we didn't have a shower and most people knew that. I think $100 would be fine.

Re: whats a good amount to give for an engagement gift?
I always give a gift off a registry for the engagement and money for the wedding.. Depending on how close of a friend it is- I'll pick a gift that is $50 to about $85.

Re: whats a good amount to give for an engagement gift?
Mine was in June, at a restaurant w/a DJ- I got only 3 actual gifts (which was good) and the rest money-It ranged from one person giving 50-400 which my great aunt gave me. On the average it was 150-200.

Re: whats a good amount to give for an engagement gift?
WOW! there is a huge contrast in what you should do. Me personally, I like the savings bond idea. Yikes to giving 400...thats steep for an E-party. I think your 150 wasnt a bad idea. Even though etiquette may say not to give, I couldnt do that. Especially since they are paying for a party. Stick with what you feel is comfortable and works for you.

Re: whats a good amount to give for an engagement gift?
I always give a gift for an engagement party because, personally, I'm not in the business of paying for other people's weddings. I'm not a fan of engagement parties unless they are with immediate family. I usually buy something in the 50-60 dollar range.

Re: whats a good amount to give for an engagement gift?
We didn't register for our eparty and didn't really expect gifts. I think most people gave us like $50-100 though.

Re: whats a good amount to give for an engagement gift?
Adding to my previous posts - most of our gifts were in the $50-150 range, but most were not cash - but something off our registry.

Ours was smaller, but we got about $50 per couple.
