Whats in your garden? Calling Veggie/Herb/Fruit Gardners

I am making a garden in my backyard for the 1st time. One of my best friends has a green thumb and is helping me out. I am deciding on veggies and herbs and maybe some fruit.

So far I wanna do
Veggie
Tomato
Cucumber
Pepper (Green and Jalapeño)
Zucchini

Herb
Basil
Rosemary
Parsley

Fruit
Strawberries
Blueberries(In patio pots)

What do you plant? What has grown well or not so well.

Any tips??
So far we prepped the area
we ripped up all grass
loosened up the earth
put lyme (pulverized) down
put peat moss down
then new topsoil down
put organic miracle grow down
then put in preen to prevent some of those pesky WEEDS!Chat Icon

We are getting plants in the next two weeks or so

Thanks!

If you're trying to go organic, skip the Preen!!

I have had a hard time with cucumbers...but we're trying them again this year.

Plan on planting:

cherry tomato
plum tomato
med. sized tomato
green pepper
lettuce - mesculin, romaine, boston
zucchini

basil
parsley
spearmint

Not sure what else...out garden was insane last year - almost to much stuff (for just the 2 of us).

Re: Whats in your garden? Calling Veggie/Herb/Fruit Gardners

We did...we got too many varieties last year. The romaine grows well...lettuce in general prefers cooler temps to grow so planting now is good. Also if you have a shadier part of your garden, plant the lettuce there.

We have tortoises so it was fun growing veggies for them. We grew kale for them...oh and I forgot, we'll probably plant beans again since they did well. Pic of the garden in August last year...

How do you keep the animals out of the food? I want to plant some fruits and veggies so badly but we frequently have squirrels, a neighbor's cat and many birds in our backyard I'm worried it will just attract more animals.

I don't know the name of it, but there is a spray you can use to deter animals, also I know human hair clippings keep away deer.

Re: Whats in your garden? Calling Veggie/Herb/Fruit Gardners

we do:

roma tomatoes
eggplant
bell and jalepeno peppers
onion
garlic
broccoli
strawberries
watermelon
basil
thyme
rosemary
celantro

I have done cucumber in the past and get a lot of cukes, but I could never pick them at the right time.

I do it all in raised beds and we live next to a 22 acre field - no problems with the rabbits and other critters. The biggest problems were the bugs on tomatoes, so I plant marigold and basil next to them now.

Minus the cat, that is exactly my issue. That is why I limited myself to spearmint, basil and oregano.

I also bought a cherry tree but that probably wont grow fruit any time soon.

Only thing I do is sprinkle cayenne pepper over them to ward off the squirrels. I'm experimenting to see if it works.

i used to plant tomatoe plants with my mom.
i'd love to do that again. it was so easy!

we just moved and the back yard needs a lot of work!!!

I tired those this year (as opposed to buying a flat), they really haven't done anything yet, I bought individual plants as well though for a failsafe
