What's something you never realized about kids before having them?
I never realized little boys had erections. I thought it started when they were around adolescent age I also never realized I'd be up for hours listening to my 2 year old ask "what's happening to my penis?"

Never realized it was possible for girls to have a "period" when they are newborn.....someone could have clued me into that

This sounds stupid but I never realized how bad the sleep deprivation really was and how it affects your thought process/memory. It's terrible! Sometimes I can't speak a simple sentence!

Me too.. Thank goodness my sister was over when i first saw the little bit of blood, otherwise i would have bugged out.

ditto! I knew there was sleep deprevation, but could never understand the extent!!!!!
Also never realized how depressed one can get right after having kids, until I cried for 2 weeks straight, and all through my birthday
Always thought when I give birth, it'll be love at first sight. Well, no, at first it was panic, than why did I do this to myself and who is this baby, and than unconditional love

Really??? See, I never knew that. I have two boys and didn't realize that they would get an erection as soon as a couple of days old.
There's actually too much to really list. I never knew how hard it was to feed a picky eater or that kids were picky eaters. Now I understand why every kid I ever met was either eating PBJ or chicken nuggets.

I never realized how hard it really is to change/dress a newborn. I was terrifed of "breaking" him. I hated to put onesies over head and was a nervous nelly for weeks.

i never realized how some infants need their routine and how imp't it is to stick with it if it works. The whole family would gossip about my SIL behind her back b/c she would leave wherever we were to get the kids home to bed by their bedtime, or not want them to eat something. Now i totally understand and feel bad i participated in the bad mouthing.

I never realized that you had to feed a baby so much in the beginning.
I never realized how much newborns sleep during the day and not at night.
I never realized what real sleep deprivation and what it can do to you until i had babies.

Of course I never really understood sleep deprevation until Lucas came along... I actually cuddled and kissed a big panda stuffed animal one night absolutely convinced it was my DS! DH thought I was nuts!!!
I also never realized how incredibly smitten I would be watching DH interact with, change the diapers of, play with and feed our DS. It is amazing to me to watch a man and his infant son!

I never knew about the erections, either.  I'm always calling my DH in to check on DS when I'm changing him, if I notice anything different - he always says it's normal.
I knew, but didn't really know, how overall my life would change. In so many, many ways. The schedules, feeding, changing, everything. But most of all I didn't know how incrediably strong my feelings would be - I don't think there is a greater love than between a mother and child. I would do anything for him, and love, love, love to just watch him - I never knew I would spend so much time watching him sleep.
I never knew I would worry so much about what could happen.

OMG - I never laughed so much the morning I found DS with "morning wood" during his AM diaper change! I called DH at work because I felt he needed to know. 
The one thing I never realized until it happened was JUST HOW LONG it takes to get myself and baby dressed and out the door! I can't STAND when people without kids say "just throw the kid in the carseat and come on over." Yeah, RIGHT!

I never realized that you would have to feed a newborn 12x a day with essentially only an hour and a half break in between each feeding!

I never realized how exhausted you can be taking care of them. Everyone told me, "sleep now, you won't sleep when he is born," but somehow, you have to experience it to understand. And I had insomnia previously too, and often went without a full night's sleep, but somehow, getting up to take care of a baby is different.

For me, I didn't realize how long it would take to go anywhere, all the stuff that needs to be packed. Now i am realizing, I prob. dont need half of it, but you just never know....

I never knew how much time I would spend at the wash machine and sink. Between bottles and laundry there is no time for "sleep when the baby sleeps"!
