What's the big deal about IPODS?
I mean, is there a benefit to having an Ipod over an MP3 player? My DH received an MP3 player that holds hundreds of songs (Memorex) but he said that everyone raves over Ipods but we have no idea what makes the Ipod so special. Asked my 19 year old nephew but he thinks its cool to further confuse the old people with tech talk... Any info is appreciated.

Ipods are the most overrated design icon of the 21st Century! IMO the quality is crap, the barely last more than a year, I had a terrible experience with mine...it died after 14 months...I had a minidisc player that lasted almost 4 years!!! I think they are disposible pieces of electronics! I think there are lots of other good MP3 players on the market out ther, unfortunately, Ipods have the lead in that market because of their design (which, I must admit is beautiful...)

Re: What's the big deal about IPODS?
It's just a name brand. They were really the first to get out there with a mass appeal and they have so many options to choose from.
I have a Dell Pocket DJ and IMO, it's so much better than an ipod. My sister got her ipod the same time as I got my DJ (Christmas 2004) and she's gone through 2 already, while mine is still going strong.
There are a few out there that I consider to be better quality, but apple does a killer job of marketing.

There really is no difference between an Ipod and an MP3 player. It has the apple name behind it and they have invested a lot of money in marketing to build the name and reputation it has. IMO, they all work the same.

Re: What's the big deal about IPODS?
An iPOd is a brand of MP3 player.
The biggest advantage, aside from the trendy factor and sleek design is that they work so seamlessly with iTunes software, so the process of getting and importing music is so easy and integrated. I LOVE it. They make it easy for non tech people to load it, make playlists, etc.
Actually, iPods are a HUGE reason for the increased popularity of Apple computers, people loved the way their iPod and iTunes software worked, so they decided to go Mac. This includes myself.
I love my iPod mini, I've had it for 2 years and it's been fine. it's so easy to use, there aren't 100 buttons, etc. Alos, there are a LOT of accessories and stereos, etc that work with iPod

Nothing. Itunes is great because it is hooked up with other companies so you can download TV shows and movies (which take forever btw).

Re: What's the big deal about IPODS?
Technology-wise, I don't think there is really too much of a difference. Ipod's are a brand name that is hyped like crazy by Apple. When you hear so much about something, the average consumer will automatically think it's the best and want that brand and only that brand.

In my opinion, I think that the Itunes application itself is one of the worst pieces of software ever designed. Besides the constant crashing, the easiest functions are never as easy as they should be. It doesnt seem to be intuitive at all. The number of threads on 'how do I use an ipod' over the past 2 days reflects how anti-intuitive it is. I'm a Network Engineer, and the ipod/itunes stuff took me too long to pick up. Their documentation is horrible. No where in the book could I find how to turn off the ipod I had to search on the internet to find out how to turn off the ipod, let alone how to synch thru Itunes. I want it to be a disk drive. I want to copy and paste songs to my ipod, in Windows Explorer - I don't want to have to use their tool to transfer my songs. But then again, Apple doesnt want to work nicely with windows, and vice-versa.

I am so surprised so many people have a problem with their ipods and itunes. My 8 year old understands how to fully use both and she only got one yesterday.

my brother as well...along with my younger cousins, ranging from the ages of 8+
I personally love itunes, and think it's VERY user friendly...I literally put in the itunes disk that came with the ipod, plugged in the ipod, and voila...done!
in regards to the OP's original question - I was never a "fan" of the ipod b/c it kept crashing on me...and constantly needed to be charged (it was a mini.) However, now I have the 30GB Video Ipod and absolutely LOVE the changes they've made. I've had it for 3+ months now, and do not need to charge it as much, and it has yet to go nutso on me.

OK, maybe the engineer in me is greedy, and wants too many features. Features features features, thats all what its about! On the other hand, simplicity is nice. Cut - Paste is my friend, not cilck here, put that there, control apple shift vulcan death grip one mouse button click.

Really?
I found it to be completely intuitive and I didn't read any documentation at all. I thought it was completely easy to just figure it out, and I could use all major functions within minutes.
My FH is a programmer and he will complain about every pieve of software he comes into contact with, and I haven't heard him complain about iTunes

it's actually even easier on a mac with the single mouse button.
You just click and drag anything. That's what I LOVE about Macs. I always thought you should be able to drag anything anywhere on a computer, but with the PC it was not so.

Maybe thats my problem, the mac version might be more intuitive to me, even thought I tend to use more keyboard shortcuts than anything else. I don't know, I could be totally off base but the number of threads this week had me because I knew I was not the only one who had problems with it to start off with when you first get one and have no prior experience.
I've had my ipod for a year - used it maybe 10 times max. The fact that it is static content, turned me off to it when I could have a dynamic content device, like a Sirius Stiletto. If only I had waited 6 months.
To each's own!
