Which specializes in which....??? (as far as mental health goes)

And is there any other name for a counselor- when I look it up under my insurance plan- there is nothing under that titleChat Icon

Re: Whats the difference between (if any)

someone who is a psychologist may also advertise "marriage counseling" "Family counseling", so I don't know if the words counselor and psychologist are mutually exclusive, but what you'll see is social workers vs. psychologists vs. psychiatrist

In your insurance plan it will show up as psychologist (MA or, what is it? PsyD?)

Or CSW, or MSW (I don't know what the letters are. But it should show what education they have and what level.

I'm not really sure what the specific differences are in schooling.

In regards to counselors I'd say the difference is with it is its more focused on a particular area, like I'm focusing on rehabilitation counseling as my career of choice, there is also school counseling, etc.

for mental health, I'd go with a rehab. counselor. There are now requirements to get a mental health licensure, i could be wrong so don't quote me not sure if all psychologists have the mental health licensure.

Re: Whats the difference between (if any)

So if someone was just having a hard time w/ life in general (nothing specific) maybe on the verge of depression.. their best bet would be to see which?

IMO, it doesn't matter if you see a psychologist or a social worker - as long as they are licensed, they are qualified to see clients. Some of the best therapists I know are social workers.

I agree. I think the most important things are what the persona specialized in (thought I think most if not all are qualified to deal with general life issues and possible depression) and how well you click with the person. They can be the most qualified therapist on earth, but if you don't get along with tehm or see eye to eye it will be worthless Chat Icon

Re: Whats the difference between (if any)

A psychologist has a doctoral degree.

A counselor usually has a master's.

Either one is appropriately trained in providing counseling/therapy.

NYS just started giving out licensure for counselors...LMHC (Licensed Mental Health Counselor)

I think there's also licenses for marriage and family therapists and something else (can't remember)

FM if you need a referral

That's all correct. In addition, Social workers are also often trained in providing counseling/therapy.

Psychologists tend to receive the most training (I would know I'm finally finishing after 8 YEARS!), but I do have to say that what is most important is that you "click" with your therapist regarless of their training. My perspective is that the relationship is the crucial variable that makes therapy therapeutic/healing so if you don't feel comfortable with your therapist from the get go, it will likely make your therapy less effective. Now, that is not to say that you must trust the person totally right away, but if your gut says your therapist is not the right person for you...it probably is not the right therapist for you!
FM if you have other questions.

Re: Whats the difference between (if any)

Anyone have rec'd for either or-

In the central- to eastern suffolk area???

Im very aware something isnt right with me... My moods are not consistent, anxiety attacks have made a return (I hadnt had one in YEARS), drastic change in eating habitsChat Icon , but I just cant pin point whats going on....???

I took myself of BCP thinking it was hormone related- but to be honest, I think it might have made things worse (although some major work related things have gone on to- so I guess thats just a coincidence)

I see my mom- and know I do not want to end up like her, she refused help for so long, its almost as if she is unhelpable (made my own wordChat Icon )
