what's the easiest way to get to the bronx zoo?
we are coming from central nassau.
i looked up directions on mapquest and google maps but both say to take the LIE and i really don't want to.
anyone know of a way i can get to the zoo via the grand central?

You can take the Grand Central to the Tri-Borough bridge and go that way

You can take the Grand Central to the Cross Island North, go over the Throgs Neck Bridge and head towards the GWB. Take the exit for the Bronx River Pkwy and the exit isn't that far after you get on - it deposits you right into the zoo parking lot.
I'm not sure how to get there from the Major Deegan but - that's sending you farther west than you have to go.

i have never taken the LIE to get to the zoo.
This is how I go:
Southern State Parkway to NY
Merge onto the Cross Island Parkway N toward Whitestone Bridge
Merge onto I-295 N exit 33 to Bronx/New England
Continue on I-95 S
Take exit 4B to Bronx River Parkway/Rosedale Ave
Merge onto Cross Bronx Expy
Slight right at E 177th Street
Turn right to stay on E 177th street
Left at E Tremont Ave
Right at Southern Blvd.

From Brooklyn, Queens or Long Island
I am going to take the SS to the Cross Island to Whitestone Bridge to Hutchinson River Pkwy North to Pelham Pkwy West. Follow Pelham Pkwy West for 2 miles and turn left on Boston Road (just after passing under the subway). Turn right at light. The Zoo’s Bronx River entrance (Gate B) is located directly ahead after the underpass

While it may sound doable remember that the ramp from the cross island to the Throgs neck is CLOSED and all those cars must go over the Whitestone which is making traffic on the Cross Island HORRIBLE !!!! Plus ALL trucks that are Bronx bound must go over the Whitestone as well....
Honestly, you better route would be:
Northern State Parkway to the Clearview North which will take you right into the Throgs Neck bridge. There will be some traffic this way, but only because they have to route the trucks off to go over to the Whitestone.
Once you go over the Throgs Neck you take 95 South (stay to the left) to the Bronx River Parkway North to exit 6 (you will see signs for the Zoo)
Have fun at the zoo !!

You couldn't pay me to go to the zoo until the bridge is fixed! I heard the traffic is horrible!! I'm bummed too since we have a membership that we haven't used yet this year. Have fun!
