Whats the point of a 1st bday party??
I've been getting this a lot from family/friends. WTH! They are asking me what the point of having a 1st bday party is since children don't even know it's their bday.
Anyone else getting these questions? WHATS YOUR RESPONSE!

Yes, just got it this morning from my uncle. My Response "Because, I will remember it, you only turn one once"
It's your kid. Enjoy it!

celebrating your baby... and the fact that they've been a part of your lives for a year. You're celebrating their life... whether they remember it or not makes no difference. Helll, there are plenty of birthday parties from my early and mid 20s that i dont remember- doesn't mean they were pointless

Re: Whats the point of a 1st bday party??
To a point I agree with that, but yeah we are still having one, but it will be small and just for family. One day your DC will want to see pictures from that day. I don't remember my 2nd birthday, but I could swear I can tell you all about it from the pictures I saw and how it was described by my parents.

ITA We got that alot when have their parties at venues. People are like whats the point.
I remember this lady who blogged about her daughter's short life who passed at 18 months. She said that she wished she'd had a big party for her daughter's 1st birthday but she didnt because people told her that her baby wouldnt remember and there would be time for others..well there wasnt and she said it is one of her biggest regrets. That touched me so much and stayed with me. So we make a point to celebrate birthdays especially the 1st birthday. Our DD's 1st bday had 85+ people--who came to celebrate her life becuase for us having a preemie that 1st year is the toughest.
ETA: Parties dont always have to be big. They can be small. Its all about reconizing and celebrating life.....life that is not promised to anyone.

Re: Whats the point of a 1st bday party??
I have in the past thought the same thing and probably will again if I am invited to one after my kids are all grown.
As a matter of fact after before dd was born I swore that I would not have one, but now that she's almost a year I feel (as I did when ds turned a year), that it is definitely an occasion to celebrate. If people disagree they don't have to come.

Re: Whats the point of a 1st bday party??
Because I don't care what people think. I wanted to celebrate his "first" birthday. For me, for DH, for DS, to make memories.
What the point to celebrate anything? Except making memories.

ITA... we had a HUGE 1st birthday for my son. he was very sick at birth, and we could have lost him just as easily. So celebrating the fact he was home with us and doing well, that was all the reason we needed to have a big celebration.

so true! Did I have a 21st Birthday
Yes, my DS will be having a big 1st birthday. It's to celebrate with family and friends. Plus, I always think it's a nice way to get everyone together to have a good time and celebrate for your child.

ITA... this reminds me of something that stuck out recently. DH's grandmother passed away a few weeks ago. Family and friends were all at my in-laws home and I remember listening to stories and pple together laughing and crying and you always hear... "It was nice getting together and seeing everyone, but under unfortunate circumstances" That's why I believe in getting together for celebrations b/c I want to see family more for good things.

ITA. Why do people feel the need to question decisions that have no affect on them.
