what's with these kids today?
My nephew is 21 and he gets a holiday bonus from his boss..around $1500 or so. he wants to buy a flat screen HDTV with it...ok fine.
How about getting your lazy butt off the couch and the 6 hrs a day you play video games and get a car and go see live people and visit your father instead of me having to drive you there?
that could be a downpayment on a decent used car
Maybe, just maybe, you could drive yourself other places..like to another job or a better job that isn't .5 mile away from your house and earn some money to get yourself an apartment, have a girlfriend..etc..
Narrow focus..
The other one is 16 and thinks he is getting a new Honda Civic..he thinks his mother is getting it for him when he gets his license..he's already picked out the one he wants all decked out.
wha???
he doesn't even have his permit yet. How about passing your drivers test first?
Is it me?
eta: I had to add that they both think I should just get a mercedes because the cars I'm looking at s u c k..yeah, that money just falls into my lap everyday. Hey bright eyes, neither one of you has a car..period!

I'll tell ya whats with them.......there all spoiled!!! My father made us work for our cars, yeah he had the money to go out and buy us a BMW if we wanted it, but he knew that wasn't the right thing to do, we would have to get a job save up and he would give us half of what a used car would cost us. I will be doing the same for my kids.

exactly!! parents are way too easy on their kids! and they don't spend time teaching them how to manage their money and decide between things they WANT and things they NEED. my parents were huge on this. from the time we were young, and we would go shopping with them, if we wanted something they would talk to us about whether we really NEEDED it or just WANTED it. parents today don't do that as much. i also had to work for my first car and wasn't handed anything. my parents had more than enough money to buy me one, but knew it wouldn't be the best thing for me in the long run. i saved up as much as i could, and they ended up matching it. it really motivated me because the more i saved up, the more i got from them- the nicer car i could get.

Re: what's with these kids today?
i agree. too many people are spoiled and feel entitled to everything good the world has to offer.
it's crazy to see how adults put a higher priority on their kids having stuff than on their kids learning how to value what they already have and how to make your own way in the world.
my son doesn't have much. i was a single mother for his first 12 years. he's learned that i can't always get him everything he wants, so he's started to do odd jobs to make some of his own money.
too many kids are spoiled!!!

My niece is 14 and wants a drivers liscense next year (in Maryland you can get one at 15 and 9 months) so she is already harping her parents. My opinion to her which she didn't like was get a job, pay for a car and insurance like I did, and then I will have no problem with it. Otherwise, shut it.

Re: what's with these kids today?
The older one is famous for thinking he knows everything. He once told me that no offense, but he wanted to buy a house sooner than I did..meaning, I didn't buy one until I was 35 and he wants to do it sooner. Ok, then well go out and save your money and do it...talk is cheap.
He wanted to take his $20K recruitment bonus and buy a car..why, will you need it for at least 6 months while you are training?
Bank, it, invest it and let it make your more money. They are not completely to blame..his mother and his father have not been the beacon of strength for him.
I want to smack both of them sometimes.

Re: what's with these kids today?
Unfortunately some kids today lack respect, morals and values. I didn't have the flashy cars some of my classmates did, but I earned it. Worked everyday since I am 15. Do you know what I did when I got my license? Drove to work and chauffered my little sister and brother around! At 6 years old my DD knows if she wants something she should save for it!

This is an age of excess.... Kids are surrounded by images of celebs who have 20 of everything... My stepdaughters talk about wanting Burberry this, Coach that, Louis bags, Manolo and Jimmy Choos, etc.... We say - ok, when you get a really good paying job, you can go nuts....

I am so glad that I have gnarled toes that make it impossible for me to wear Manolo and Jimmy Choo Shoes comfortably. Otherwise I'd be up poop's creek!

Re: what's with these kids today?
This is a subject that really irritates the heck out of me. My father never really had money. So my sister and I learned to do without. When I got my license, my father gave me his ugly green lincoln continental. The thing was a boat, but I was just excited to even have a car. I didn't care what other people thought. So it has taught me to go after a good paying job so I can have the things I need...and the things I want. DH, on the other hand, was handed everything. Even up to a few months ago, his mother paid off all of his debt. It's ridiculous. He had no job and went and bought a jetski and a brand new truck. And mommy made the payments for him. Then I stepped intot he picture and cut him off from her money. So she goes and pays it all off. Even after I made him sell the jetski! He has no concept of money or where it goes. It's so irritating. We would never argue if it weren't for money. So I hope to raise my kids with the same respect for money that I had growing up.

I would have punished her for mouthing off. My kids are little ... so a fifteen minute time out seems like eternity to them.

Re: what's with these kids today?
The entitlement is crazy. At 13, my sister had a cell phone. But because it didn't have games and a camera she refused to take it with her anywhere and said she wouldn't use a phone until my parents upgraded her to a better phone.
So, of course, they did.
Heck, I've seen my 5th grader's phones... they're nicer than mine
What I want to know is, where is a 5th grader EVER where they wouldn't have access to a phone?

What would have happened to her if she were mine I can't even put in writing. I would have been arrested, but, I can guarantee she would never have mouthed off to me again. Arrogant little b*tch!

Re: what's with these kids today?
years ago (I was about 18), I was driving around my best friend and her younger brother (who was about 10 at the time and a pain in the @ss)... He was sitting in my back seat complaining about how awful my old buick was and how I should get a new car... I was on a fairly busy 4 lane road at the time... about 2 miles from their home.
Rather than even arguing with the spoiled brat, I merely pulled over, parked the car, and said to him 'Well, if it's so embarassing and uncomfortable in this car, you should walk.'
silence is indeed golden

Re: what's with these kids today?
I don't know if it's kids today, necessarily. I teach in a high school in a fairly affluent area, and the majority of my students have jobs. I think it's "kids in general" -- there will always be some who think they deserve everything they want. They were in our generation too.

Re: what's with these kids today?
I am just amazed that so many people feel like they don't have to work for what they want.
I was watching Suze Orman this weekend and she had a caller on who blew threw over $1.2 million. Granted, he bought a house for $470,000 cash. He then proceeded to blow through the rest of the money on a new car, furntiure and random crap. He helped out his mom (medical bills) and he quit his IT job because he didn't like it and he did not look for a new job.
Once he was completely broke he refinanced the paid off house at 100% and then had to go back to work to make the mortgage payment.
