When accidentally dialing the wrong number, is it rude to
ask the person who picked up to confirm the number you dialed?
I just dialed the wrong number and asked for "Mary." The woman who answered the phone said "there's no Mary here."
I said "oh, I'm sorry, is this 917..."
She cut me off and said "MAAM, I SAID THERE'S NO MARY HERE"
Seriously, I was just trying to figure out if I MISDIALED or if I actually had the wrong number. And, I would have said that, too, if I weren't calling from my office phone, which I know shows up on caller ID...so, I just said "oh, so sorry" and hung up.
WTH hell is WRONG with people??? Why do they have to be so NASTY???

I don't think it's rude to confirm the number. Because if you don't check what number you dialed, there is a good chance you will hang up and call that same number right back again.
People are so weird sometimes!

She was rude.
If someone calls my house and asks for someone not there, I always ask what number they are calling. It takes that step of them calling AGAIN and still having the wrong number. I will not tell them the number the called, only if they dialed wrong. Usually I get them trying to dial a 516 number, but called my 631 number.

LOL- too bad it really WAS a misdial. I DID try again, armed and ready with "well, I was TRYING to find out if I had the wrong number, but YOU wouldn't let me," but then I got thru to the right person! So, I have no idea what I actually dialed the first time around.

She was rude, not you! I usually forget to ask and check the number but I would never have a problem with someone asking me. I get wrong # calls at work ALL the time and I am currently trying to find out who is giving out my number by mistake

This was on a Seinfeld episode once.
I don't think it was rude at all to ask about the number.

So do I.
A few times people called my office looking for CVS or Northfork bank (before it was Capital One). When I said they had the wrong number they asked me if I was sure. Um, yea, I'm pretty sure I'm not in a CVS right now. And THEN they asked me for the right number to those two places!!! Why the heck would I have the information???

Once I misdialed Cablevision's suffolk county number. It's just a combo of 2 and 5's so it's confusing. It must happen ALL the time because it was an answering machine saying:
"You are NOT calling Cablevision. This is Jennifer. If you want to call Cablevision, dial XXX-XXXX. If you want to talk to Jennifer, leave a message."

She was TOTALLY rude!
I get wrong numbers at work all the the time - I usually ask the person if they meant to dial 212 area code. That solves the problem most of the time.

Re: When accidentally dialing the wrong number, is it rude to
I dont think its rude to confirm, because like you said you need to check if you dialed wrong or actually have the wrong number. What bothers me is when people confirm, i tell them its not the right number and they continue to ask. (This happens frequently to me bc apparently my house number was a delivery company's number before we got it)

That's pretty funny! To the OP - no I do not think it is rude, in fact it is what I always do!
My old office number was the same as another company but ours was 212 and theirs was 718. We would get calls so regularly for this other business that we would just give people the right number. We did get a lot of, "are you sure" when we told them they called the wrong number.

Our union main office used to have a message that said: "You have reached National Organization of Legal Services Workers, UAW 2320. If you are calling the Vermont Teddy Bear Company you have dialed the wrong number. Please hang up and dial xxx-xxxx. If you wish to speak to someone at the National Organization of Legal Services Workers, UAW 2320 please press 1 . . ."
That message is gone now, so I think Vermont Teddy Bear changed their number, because we didn't!
