When can I take my baby in a pool?

My little girl is due at the end of June and my ILs just put in a brand new pool that I can't wait to take her in! BUT, I keep hearing that you can't put sunscreen on babies who are less than 6 months old, etc....shouldn't i be able to take her in at like 8 weeks with a hat on and protected from the sun?

Re: When can I take my baby in a pool?

I think it has more to do with the temp of the pool than an age of a baby.

That's exactly why I never took Ava in last summer. It's so drying on their skin at that age. Also, my ped. said that they used to recommend no sunscreen until 6 months, but that the damage that sun could do to a newborn's skin was far more harmful than what sunscreen could do to harm her. So we've always put it on her since day one.

My DD was born early May last year and I had her in the pool last summer. I used sunscreen, hat and a pool float with a sun visor. Sometimes she loved it, sometimes she didn't.

Re: When can I take my baby in a pool?

We put DD in the pool at 3 months for the first time. No reactions to the clorine but she doesn't have very sensitive skin.
We also gave in and started using sunscreen. She is the same size as her sixth month old cousin so I figured it was safer than the sun, especially here in CA.

Re: When can I take my baby in a pool?

I asked DD's ped this and she said it's not the chemicals to worry about, it's cocksackie in public pools. She said if it's a private pool, it's fine.

Also, I saw some sunscreen for babies under 6 mos..it's made by MD Moms. They sell it on The Right Start website or One Step Ahead and Amazon. I'm not sure what makes it different than regular sunscreen (except the exhoribtant price!)

We started at 5 months. My ped said sunscreen after 3 months is fine.

Re: When can I take my baby in a pool?

We have a public pool where I live, dr is concerned about how much urine josh will swallow. He said a dip is fine but I should find another summer hobby.

I think private pools should be fine.
