When did nail salons become popular?
I don't remember them before the mid 90's, were they around before then? I mean, I remember hair salons had someone who could do them, but I don't remember the stand-alone nail places.

it's the Korean places that went up everywhere! not so much regular full service salons

I used to get manicures when I was a temp in HS around Macy's so 1984-ish? And they were standalone dime a dozen tiny Korean run places (as opposed to just a nail station at a hair salon).

I feel like I've lost my mind! I don't remember them at all.

It's so funny you say this because DH & I were checking out our new neighborhood and we couldn't stop laughing - every single plaza (which there's a LOT) had a nail place in it. I guess people in town have lots of nails to take care of.

this is what I mean! I went to Sayville HS in the late 80's and I don't remember even one nail salon! Now the town is overrun!

I remember them in the early 80's. Not so much an advertized nail salon but a hair salon that had manicure services.

Re: When did nail salons become popular?
I would say late 1980s. I graduated high school in the mid 80s and never heard of anyone my age getting a manicure. I think my hair salon had a nail station, but I don't remember nail salons. Then, when I graduated college, I worked in Manhattan for the summer and remember seeing them in the neighborhood.

I don't remember them till the 90's and even then it was because I remember my brother's then-girlfriend telling us how there were these nail "huts" in FL where her parents lived and nails were cheap there because it was just nails. That was 91.

Re: When did nail salons become popular?
I feel that although there a ton of them out there I can probably count on one hand the good ones that are clean and give you a real manicure...and Im talking about the ones in the City and in Queens.
