When did teachers/school professionals lose respect?
I am AMAZED at some of the attitudes parent have. Never did I think I would have to fight over hard data!! I don't CARE that your child can recite Shakespeare at home- if he can't say his name in school, then there is a PROBLEM!!!
Why did I spend years and thousands of dollars getting my degree? Apparently I know NOTHING.....

I think it happened right around the time I started teaching. It is sad. I agree.

Well I am in year 12 and have to say it's been bad since I started. I think the higher taxes get the less respect we get.

I work in an affluent school district. I am beginning to understand why I replaced an SLP who requested a transfer to a Title I school......

I couldt agree with you more. The attitude you get from parents these days. You call home to tell them that "johny" threw a pencil in class, and the parent will say, well what did "YOU" do to provoke him to throw it??
UH HELLO, are you KIDDING me, and we get responses like that. If I ever got a phone call home from a parent if I was in school, i wouldnt be able to sit down for a week. It really is APPALLING

In my experience, Title I schools were just as bad as far as the parents' attitudes.

OMG Diane I had one of those too. I had a girl write the answers to the quiz on her hand. I caught her prior to giving out the quiz and sent her to the dean. She even stopped to wash her hands along the way. The mother calls me up and says since I didn't give her the opportunity to cheat how do I know that she actually intended to use the answers on her hand She then proceeded to grill me. Normally I have a bond with my kids. I send them to the dean and just give them a couple of detentions, tell them they have to earn my trust back but I let them take another quiz, because of this mom and the child's actions of washing her hands I gave her a 0. First time ever in 12 years. She is in the accelerated class and has to maintain an 85 average or Buh bye. She got a 77. She came today to ask me if I was dropping her because her mom said she didn't do anything wrong.

I had two 10th graders deny plagarizing today. They said, "we switched a few words around." I told them that was still plagarizing and both of their essays will receive zeros!

Re: When did teachers/school professionals lose respect?
ha ha my friend was told by a parent that she didn't give birth to the child so it is none of her business ( a discipline issue ) and that we need to (the school ) stay out of his business. "Ya'll are always up in his business"

I caught a student plagerizing and when I called the parent she said "what's the big deal?"

Don't even get me started with the way parents are. I feel sometimes it is a losing battle.
