maybe at 6 months. I found them for 1.00 at Target. Just basic pictures.

I mainly do it to include Leo in our playtime. I say the word in English, he says it in Spanish.

Now, I keep a set in the car, if its a longer ride, I sit back there and entertain him with the cards.

I just starting using them at 19 months. I found a set of Dora ones and I am shocked at how my DD rambles off the names of things as I go through them

sounds dumb, but I just started some reading flashcards at 4 months with DD....apparently kids can learn to read best under the age of 1 and the earlier you start, the better. I am borrowing them from a family friend.

Wow- I didn't even think of using flashcards so early. I've just been reading to DS every night. But those flashcards posted are great - I bookmarked them so I can purchase. Thanks for the recommendation!

I have Baby Einstein ones, but I think Luca would rather eat them than look at them. He's a year old.

I got the ones from One Step Ahead (they also sell them in Border's and Barnes & Noble) for her when she was about a year old. She already had been labling objects in books before that, but I got them as just another way for us to practice.

She has a large vocabulary now and I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that we labeled objects (in books, flash cards, or just while we were out and about) a lot even at a young age.

I figure that it probably won't hurt to try it, so the younger the better.

I try to avoid illustrated ones because often they do not look like the objects in real life... ex. pictures of a cartoon dog or cat and can sometimes confuse kids that are very literal. I'd rather use real photos but they are harder to find.

There are also many webpages that contain downloadable flashcards. You can print them, cut them and mount them on big 5 x & index cards.

I borrowed a book from a friend, "How to give your child Encyclopedic Knowledge" and it outlines different categories to concentrate on at different ages and how to include facts (in a higher order learning style) over time when you introduce flashcards.

A lot of research has been done on this and believe it or not, the faster (and I mean less than a second) you hold up each card, the faster they pick it up. Their brain really engages because of the speed and their attention doesn't drift. All of this is outlined in the book.

Every morning after breakfast we do a set of ten cards. Each week, I introduce ten new cards and we do them two to three times a day. Each session takes less than two minutes so it sounds like a lot more than it is. For the last few weeks we have been working our way through a packet on animals. Right now we are doing ten animals that live in the ocean. Obviously, as they grow, you can recategorize them by two legged, four legged, etc. As they further mature, I'll ask them to put them into categories.

Of course, you can tell I'm a teacher Doesn't matter how you do it, or how sophisticated you get, kids will still benefit by object recognition, vocabulary and seeing site words... all good things.

We started at about 3.5 months on ABC flash cards that we made ourselves. I seemed crazy to me at the time, but DS enjoyed looking at them and listening to the goofy song we made up for them, whether or not he was absorbing anything that early.
