When did you hear DC first word?
Rylan hasn't said anything yet...he'll be 1 on the 28th. He won't even try to. While i'm not at all concerned yet it is kinda late right?

Re: When did you hear DC first word?
DD dosent say much either, she says momma, dadda once in a blue moon....she has her own words for things though and is trying to say the word shoes (she has a small obsession)
DD is 14 months not sure if shes behind or not...possibly.

Clearly - and to the point where we knew what he was saying - at 11 months.

Re: When did you hear DC first word?
he was saying a few words like "mama", "dada", and "book" (that one was kind of random) at about 10-11 months. but he wasn't saying them consistently.
i don't think that there is anything to worry about for you right now... every child is different and it sounds like yours is well within the normal range.

She is correct. Alot of children do talk before then - but at 18 months is usually when you hear the word explosion.
When Jack was 15 months his ped suggested I call EI since he was only saying Dada. I did and talked it over with them and we both thought it was best to call back at 18 months if I didn't see any progress!
You can always FM me if you have any questions

Re: When did you hear DC first word?
Mads didn't say her first *real* word (baba=bottle) until a year. She was babbling like crazy, so I wasn't REALLY concerned.
BUT- as a speech therapist, I admit I WAS kinda feeling a little put off that she wasn't full on talking by then.
The range of normal is SO broad.

Re: When did you hear DC first word?
Kaydyn said her first word dada at 6months. That was all she said until right before a year. Now she says about 5-6 words....but she does tend to call everything dada.

Re: When did you hear DC first word?
My DD is 9 1/2 months. She has been making sounds that sound like words for a while, but not using them in the correct context, so I didn't count her as having said a word. At 9 months she called me Mama and has done that about once a day since then. She also "says" Dada, baba and Hi but not in the right context. So, I'm only counting Mama right now.

Re: When did you hear DC first word?
DD is 9 months and says- mama, dada, nanny, nonna and babba. When she see's my mother she says "nonna" and when she see's me and my DH she will say "mama and dada". DS calls my mil "nanny", so she most likely picked that up from hearing him. "Baba" is something that she says all day long..

Re: When did you hear DC first word?
Hannah used to make the "mama" sound a few months ago but hasnt said it ever again. however she says "dada" and "daddy" all the time. but I have to say I think her first word that shes really saying is "Hi" and shes been now for a couple of weeks. she loves it and will say it when someone comes in the door or we walk into a room. and then of course if you keep saying it back to her she goes crazy with it.
ETA- but thats all she is saying and they are the same age so I dont think he is late at all.. unless they both are.

Re: When did you hear DC first word?
Ds wasn't really saying anything consistent at 1. Then he started picking up a coule of words around 14-16 months. By 18 months he had a verbal explosion and was putting together small 2-3 word sentences.

Landon is 9 months and says mama, dada, buh-bye regularly. His two new words are duck and cat. I wouldn't worry yet. My nephew didn't say anything til almost 2 years old!

Re: When did you hear DC first word?
My DD will be 1 on 3/17 and she says mama, dada and baba (sometimes). She is constantly babbling and sometimes I thing I hear a word here or there, but nothing consistent.

Re: When did you hear DC first word?
OK...so it seems just about all of the babies on this thread DID say something before a year. Hmmm....like I said i'm not worried or concerned but it seems like most do at this point. He seems to have no interest in trying yet.

Re: When did you hear DC first word?
dawn my son is the same way he says dada very rarely and mama. my daughter at the same point was saying at least 7 words. each child is so different. i was told when you talk to you son to use his name and then an object after it :
ex Rylans toy
i havent seen a difference since ive been doing it but my pediatrician says it gets the baby's attention.

Re: When did you hear DC first word?
Christopher said Dada very early, like 7-8 months. And was saying uhoh A LOT by 10 months.
He had a word explosion between 12 and 18 months and was speaking in sentences (short ones) by 15 months.
BUT he didn't walk until almost 16 months, I honestly believe that kids just do things at their own pace and develop so differently, you know?(ie walk earlier/talk later)

Re: When did you hear DC first word?
#1: 5 months-Dada 6 months-Mama 10 months-Abby(our dog's name)
#2 6 months-Dada 7 months- Mama 10 months-Abby(our dog).
I don't think either DD really understood what Dada and Mama were until closer to 7-8 months though. My first DD started talking ealry, but she actually wasn't much of a talker until she was 2. Now at 2 1/2 she never stops. I really wouldn't worry at 1.

Re: When did you hear DC first word?
My DS babbled a lot from a very early age but I don't think there was any word that he was saying with understanding until long after he was a year. I used to say he was just playing with his voice. He is not yet 17 months and he has a lot of words now, but no sentences and "mama" is not even one of the words he uses on a regular basis. I'm told he does it more when I am not there and he is asking for me?! I'm hoping it's just because there's no one else calling me mama or even mommy in front of him. He says, "dirty," and "purple," but he won't say "mama" .

DD said Mama, Dada and Hi around 8 months, but didn't say too much else until this month - now we she also says: Sock, Ball, Dog, No and No More.

Re: When did you hear DC first word?
My son has babbled Dada, Mama, No No No No, Baba etc for months but I honestly think that it's so hard to tell when they really know that you or your husband are Mama and Dada since they babble it so much. I personally will not give him credit until I am 100% sure that he is saying it towards us. I am just starting to believe he knows that I am Mama because he will run up to me saying Mama when I walk in the room. He was probably saying it before that but I couldn't be sure he meant me. He also says Car and Go. He is 14 months today but he didn't say anything until 13 months. sure he babbled, but real words - there was not even one at a year. My son is always behind on communication type things like talking and pointing, responding to his name etc. I was told not to worry just yet and I did have him evaluated by EI (mainly because I was concerned that he wasn't responding to his name or pointing at 11.5 months - sure enough he did both a couple weeks later).
I wouldn't worry just yet.
