As soon as they can grab the spoon and sit up. DC spent quite a bit of time covering themselves with food when they first started with utensils. It's the only way to learn. Just be prepared to give a bath right after the meal! Chat Icon

As long as the spoon is one of those softer, plastic or rubber coated ones, and you're basically doing it so he gets used to the spoon, I don't see a problem. At 5 months, he won't be coordinated enough to actually feed himself, but he may get a few spoonfuls in. You'll still need to feed him after he's done, of course, but he'll eventually figure it out.

for a spoon? I think that is early but try it and see what happens. At 5 months old Andrew def did not have the coordination to get the spoon to his mouth.

ok thanks! i didn't want to do it this early and didn't think i should but then a friend mentioned it to me and i thought i may be "holding him back" by not giving it to him. i think i'll wait a while longer. thanx!

You're definitely not holding him back. 5mo is definitely early, but if you want to see how he does, that's fine. I think we started DC around 10 months or so.
