When did you start to use a blanket for your child?

She is 8 months old now... am I crazy to still be paranoid about using one?

We used sleeping bags until recently, we started with a pillow at about a year and then with a comforter at about 18 months. He didn't really get it until recently.

Its so cute to check on him in the night all lovely and tucked in with his green hippo duvet!

Re: When did you start to use a blanket for your child?

We have two spring babies, so the first winter was just sleepsacks. The 2nd winter we started using blankets, so around 18 months or so.

Re: When did you start to use a blanket for your child?

I've used a blanket almost from day 1. She was born in late April and once we put the a/c on, I was afraid she would be cold. So, we swaddled her and put a receiving blanket on her. Once she was done with swaddling, we continued to use a receiving blanket, or one that was a little heavier. I never put it up by her shoulders. It was only ever placed from her waist down. I just felt better with her being a little covered.

I will not use a blanket until she is about 2. I could NEVER forgive myself if something happened due to a stupid, unnecessary blanket.

We use a blanket for her lower half, I put her arms over it because she hates to have them covered anyway. BUT, after reading sweetness' post, I will only do the sleep sacks from now on. I just figured she needed the extra warmth but I will now dress her heavier underneath those things. I'm terrified now. Chat Icon

Re: When did you start to use a blanket for your child?

I used one for DD last winter just on her lower half. This year my #2 is swaddled still so she doesn't need one.

But after hearing about my SIL's coworker, there's no way i'm using a blanket for a long time in their cribs. I don't think i'll use one until they are in their toddler beds.

Right now my 19 month old sleeps in a fleece sleeper with an undershirt and socks and my 5 month old sleeps in a reg sleeper, undershirt with her miracle blanket. When my 5 month old gets rid of the miracle blanket, she's going in a halo sleep sac

I think thats a bit of a knee jerk reaction, there are a lot of factors in SIDS besides blankets. Most children past the age of sort of 18 months know if they aren't breathing and they can correct themselves. If you don't want to use blankets, thats fine, but SIDS usually affects children under the age of 1, so if your child is over 1, a blanket isn't that much of a dangerous item.

Lets make sure that everyone isn't terrified and knows the facts!

No blanket yet at 14mths. I used the sleep sacks last winter now I use the thick fleece pj's and I keep the temp warmer. He is good! I do however use a pillow.

Re: When did you start to use a blanket for your child?

I started giving DS a blanket around 6 1/2 months. I also put his bumpers in at that time. He has never once pulled it over his head and most of the time he kicks it off anyway.

To be honest, I personally think that babies that die of SIDS especially after 6 months have something wrong with them that went undetected, whether it be respiratory, neurological or something else, something just wasn't right. I know that when they do an autopsy and can't find anything they rule it as a SIDS related death, but I still believe this.

DS is 15 months and I don't use a blanket. He moves around way too much!

At around 12 months I started letting him sleep with a cloth burp cloth...which is his "blanky", but that is about all I will put in the crib for awhile.

Halo makes the sleep saks with feet now that I am going to start using.

DD is 18 mths and we still dont use a blanket! I am too nervous but also, she moves around so much it would be off in 2 min anyway. in the winter, we use the halo sleepsacks. I probably wont give her a pillow and blanket till shes in her toddler bed.
