when do I have to dig up the flowers?

Having lived in an apartment for a while, I haven't had to do a whole lot of gardening.

The house we just bought has tons of impatients planted outside that are waist high (they're HUGE!)

At what point do I pull them out of the ground? Do I just yank them out? Yank them out and turn the soil?

Keep them in until the first frost. They'll die after the frost and you can pull them out then.

Okay. Thanks.

I'm not in a hurry to get them out - I plan on replanting next year. I just had no idea when I was supposed to remove them.

My system was going to be wait until you see the neighbors pulling theirs out and do it then... Chat Icon

Impatients die and you buy new ones next year to plant. I don't think you can replant them.

Oh NOOOOOOOO that's not what I meant. I meant to say I plan to plant impatients again next year.

My mom planted them every year of my life - I DO know that much. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA - I just looked at what I wrote and see how that was confusing.

I just meant "I'm not going to be that gardening idiot who just has dirt in front of her house... I'll be planting flowers again next year." Chat Icon

Ah, gotcha!Chat Icon Chat Icon

I interchanged this year - I bought impatients and marigolds. Next year, I'm buying more, and planting them every other, cause they really do bloom largely!

Wanna hear something weird...... Every year I plant TONS of impatients in my front yard ( I have a very large garden in front ) I didn't this year because I was in Greece for the whole first 1/2 of the summer . Well , almost all of impatients grew back this year....... They are deifnitly not supposed to , bu last year I don't think I bothered to pull them out when they died either....... Very strange.........

We have impatiens growing in spots around our house, and we planted none this year. I've seen that elsewhere too. I think seeds must get released into the soil.

I think you're right. My mom changes the color flowers she plants every year, but some years, the previous year's colors start popping up. I guess from the last year's seeds.
