When do kids go to preschool / nursery school?

I've heard some people talking about preschool at age two but isn't that really young?

Re: When do kids go to preschool / nursery school?

DS started at two, and he was very ready. DH and I both work and he was home with the nanny all day. Even though she was always taking him out (park, playgroups, Gymboree, etc.), we really felt that he needed more social experiences. He separated immediately and loved (and still loves) school.

We started DD in nursery school just this week, and she is 21 months. I was hesitant, but she is very verbal and very independent. The teachers spent some time with her and agreed that she is ready. She is the youngest in the class by a good 3 months, but she is thrilled with school so far, and the teachers said she fits right in.

I guess it depends on your child. Some of my friends' children just weren't ready until they were 3, and that was right for them.

I think it really depends on the child and the parents. My son went when he was 3. He did a year of pre-school and then a year of pre-k. My daughter is 4 now and she just started this year. I wanted her to go last year, but she was a little late with potty training and she couldn't go. So she will just do pre-k and then start kindergarten next year.

IMO yes I think it's young. Here I think 2&1/2 is the earliest they will take you and those are few and far between. Most are 3 and older. I don't plan to send DD until she is at least 3.

Joseph moved up to pre-school at 3 years old. Maddie was in pre-school at 2-1/2 years old. I think it definitely speeded up the potty training. The old school's teacher told me they don't potty train the 2 year olds - even though she would tell them she needed to go. I was so glad to switch.

It's just amazing how education has changed since we were kids. I don't think I was in a "formal" program until I was at least 4 or 5.

Just thinking of sending Kevin off to school so soon makes me teary. I'm going to be a wreck when he goes off on the school bus for Kindergarten!

Jillian goes 3 days a week now for 3 hours and loves it.. She was very verbal and i felt she needed some formal play time. She loves it and adjusted really well. She also listen so much better now

I think that pretty young. I think at 3 they'd be more prepared.

I will probably send EMily when she is 3. I used to teach Pre-K, and am still a teacher, and I think that some things are rushed. So much is expected of some children and I don't completely agree with it.

I do agree with doing Mommy & Me classes for the socialization, but don't think that 2 is old enough for preschool.

My son has gone to daycare since 3 months. At age 2, he was in the toddler class where they did "preschool" things but he was not truly in "preschool" class until age 3. He is there all day 8:45-5:10.

I am thinking of keeping Andrew home until he's 4 to start pre-K, which would be 2 hours a day, 5 days a week. Its the same schedule for a 3 year old, and I am not sure I want him to start just then. We'll see, its a big debate in our house.

I am considering sending Talia at 2 - but I might wait until she is three. I haven't decided yet. I really think it depends on the program and the kid.

Re: When do kids go to preschool / nursery school?

I started DD (2.5) in toddler playgroup this fall. The first few classes were fine but then she started getting upset (even threw up) so I took her out.

I could have left her in and hoped that she would get over it but DH and I decided that since she was so young it wasn't worth pushing.

We enrolled her in a dance class and DH stays in the room w/ her. She is more comfortable and enjoys it.

IMO every kid is different as well as every situation. You know your child the best and it's up to you to decide what works best.

Re: When do kids go to preschool / nursery school?

I will be sending Jacob to the 2 year old in September program at the temple around the block from me for 3 days a week for 2 hours...

With that being said, I am starting him at the mommy and me at the same temple in January which goes through the spring, then he will be going to summer camp at the same place twice a week during the summer. Being seperated from me in the summer willl hopefully help in the transition to the toddler class.

It was important to me that I found somewhere where he will be very familiar with the surroundings.

I feel every child is different and it is up to the parent to decide what is best for the child.

No answer is wrong..

Plus, my mother taught the toddler program at a temple for 15 years so I think her insight helpmed me in my decision.
