When do the Sleep Through the Night?

Not that I'm complaining that much Chat Icon but at what age do babies "typically" sleep through the night. Cameron goes for about four hours at a time, sometime a little more...but I literally dream about the time when she will sleep a solid eight hours straight!!

Also, at what age can you attempt the CIO or Ferber method?

Kevin started doing 10/11pm until 6am at about 12 weeks. Now he goes a little longer. He is 6 months - I haven't really used CIO too much at all.

Re: When do the Sleep Through the Night?

At about 3 or 3 1/2 weeks, the twins started to sleep through the night. That's about 10/11 at night to 6 or 7 in the morning.

YOU AND ME BOTH!!! Chat Icon

Jake is doing the same - 4 hrs, then a bottle, then another 4 hrs and then he's up for the day with a few brief naps here and there. I would looooove to get even 5 hrs straight out of him!

We've already tried our own modified version of CIO (if you can call it that). I never let him cry more than 5 mins though but when he's really tired that's all it takes and he's out like a light.

Stefanie - you have to share your secret!! Jared is such a good sleeper! You are so lucky!!

Re: When do the Sleep Through the Night?

I don't know what it is that I do...

Jared gets up around 9:00-9:30, he eats 6 oz, we play then he takes an afternoon nap for a 1/2 hour. He eats, plays and just hangs out for the rest of the afternoon. Sometimes he takes another hour nap in the late afternoon. In the evening, I give him his bath, feed him again and get him into bed by 8:30ish. If he wakes up in his crib, I give him his pacifer or even a little sip more of formula...then he's out!

Claire is 8 months and she is still getting up once a night to eat. She is BF so I dont know if that makes a difference at this point. It doesn't bother me too much since I have gotten used to it, but I am hoping by at least 1 year she can go for at least 6-7 hours straight!

Hmmm... maybe it's because he's getting a good amount of formula. I was cautious about upping Jake's formula to over 5 oz but we got the okay from the pediatrician today so I'm going to try it. He's been chowing through his bottles anyway.

DH heard somewhere that once babies hit over 11lbs they start sleeping longer. Jake was 11lbs 1oz today so I'm hoping it means longer sleep at night.

How much did Jared weigh when he started sleeping through the night (or how old was he)? Is he still eating every 4 hours during the day too?

I have a parenting book that states once a baby weighs 11 pounds, from a metabolic standpoint they can sleep through the night.

Jesse is BF and has been sleeping through the night since he was just shy of 3 months old (about 7 hours). He will be 4 months in a week, and he now sleeps 9-10 hours per night.

Don't mean to burst your bubble but that's not the case for me. Nate is about 15lbs and still gets up at 2 or 3 am for a feeding, so that theory is shot for us at least. Chat Icon Chat Icon

What the book means is that physically his body can make it through the night without a feeding. However, Nate might not be able to for other reasons (emotionally he needs to see mommy or is used to his schedule where he gets fed at that time, etc). When he awakens at that time, try some caresses and whatever else you do to get him to sleep, but don't feed him - see if he goes back to sleep.

See this is what my Mom suggested I do. I can't imagine not feeding him when he wakes for his 2 am feeding. You would think he was going to chew his little fingers off the way he ***** on them because he's so hungry! I could just imagine him wailing through the rest of the night.

You mean my Mom could be right? Has anyone else tried this - skipping the feeding? Did baby go back to sleep?

Re: When do the Sleep Through the Night?

Ava didn't go through the night until she was 4 months old - she'd sleep from 7:30 to about 5:45. Now that she is EXTREMELY active I get a good 12 hours out of her but this has only been going on for about a month.

When she woke up during the night I fed her - I'd wait 2-3 minutes before going in just to make sure she was up. When they are ready to sleep the night you won't hear a peep out of them. They wake at a young age b/c they are hungry.

I started CIO/Ferber Method with her naps first around 5 months - at 6 months we did it for bedtime. We've had a few relapses due to teething but it definitely works.

I tried this last night. I was able to get him back to sleep for another hour, but then he woke up and screamed for 20 min even after I took him out of the co-sleeper to rock him back to sleep. For the first time since Nate has been home DH actually woke up to see what was wrong with him. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Sorry it didn't work for you! Does he take a full feeding at that time? Another suggestion I've heard is to give him less at his feeding each day until he won't miss it anymore.

All babies are different and you never know what will work for yours. Keep trying different things and try not to get discouraged. Chat Icon

CIO/Ferber is recommended only after at least four months. I'd wait until your baby seems to have some self soothing behavior -- such as finger sucking and the abililty to roll over to get comfortable.

In terms of sleeping through the night, most books tell you not to expect it until 6 months. My 4.5 month old is still up once a night for a feeding. Sounds like there are many lucky moms around here!!

Hmm, I had no clue that the Ferber method is recommended for babies at least 4 months. My son's only a month and we tried the Ferber method last night for the first time. It was actually really effective for us. He fell asleep in the 15-minute interval and slept for 5 hours straight (which is the first time he's slept that long at nighttime), woke up for a bottle, and went back to sleep for another 3 hours. It was wonderful to get some sleep.
