When do they start understanding "No"?
Argh! I must say that 100000000 times a day, and she just smiles at me and keeps going. So frustrating!

MMMMMMMM-HMMMM!!
She knows what NO is, she's just testing you to see if you'll cave in and let her do what she wants. Just be stern. Amber used to pull that until I started sounding like my grizzly bear dad who she quivers at when he says No. It's all about tone.

Re: When do they start understanding "No"?
I dont think they do ever.. my son is 2 1/2 and has only begun to understand it if I give him a consequence.. but he is a boy and has selective hearing already.. so like the post mentioned above, I am worried that he will catch up with my DH too!
Hang in there.. keep it stern and try using consequences.. Mommy said no, or I will take away your crayons.. etc.. good luck!!!!!

Re: When do they start understanding "No"?
Oh - I think Kevin is starting to understand but is totally testing us. He will stop when I say no sternly but then usually turns and smiles or laughs at me and keeps going. Sometimes when I say no he puts on this pout face and starts to cry (melts my heart - I must confess).
My favorite is when we say no and he looks at us and goes 'HA" and continues with what he is was going to do.

When I tell Grace No she stops, looks at me, smiles, takes a deep breath, then crawls as fast as she can before I can catch her! Its funny but

I know! I didn't think that being fresh would start so young!

Re: When do they start understanding "No"?
There are different ways you can say no all depending on your tone.
If she's in danger and you say "No!", I can assue you she'll stop & cry.
If you're not serious when you say No, they're not going to take you seriously.
